Russian NO - Mikhail Pletnev (rec. 2000)

I'm not sure how everyone feels about Pletnev's reading of The Bells, but I really like his soloists. The last time I heard this work was from Svetlanov and Ashkenazy.

I don't know John of Damascus at all. I almost wrote it off as too conservative, but Taneyev's work ends up quite powerful.

Schubert, Franz - Piano Trios - spending a few hours comparing the double-disc sets of these works shown below; two using fortepianos and Golub/Kaplan/Carr on MIs, a recording that I've owned for 30 years!  Will check Amazon to see what new may have appeared (of course, there are plenty of older excellent versions) - any new period instrument productions mentioned appreciated.  Dave :)

Ahem! The Golub/Kaplan/Carr disc is Mendelssohn's Piano Trios.  ;D

GGK is unabridged in Trio 2. I don't say that this is a positive thing, just a fact.

OOPS!  :o  Well, I picked the wrong cover art (which looks similar) - below the correct recording w/ Golub-Kaplan-Carr on 2 discs - thanks - will go back and change my post.  Dave

Still the best performances I know.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Disc four.  This cycle struck me as very fine when I listened to it initially, and now, just listening casually, it strikes me as even better.  Op 26 is a corker, with ear pleasing sforzandi.

Some Beethoven here now as well, but of a much earlier vintage: Victor de Sabata conducts London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Eroica (1946 studio recording).

Nice disc. As for the PC C min, I still like the recording from Vox.
