Serbia-Switzerland 2-2 half time. This will certainly be the most heated and dramatic match so far.

Go, Serbia!

Go, Serbia!

The Swiss were much better in the second half and deserved their qualifying. Bravi!

Also, bravi Cameroun! They didn't qualify but joined the very select club of teams that beated Brazil at WC.

A special hat tip to Rigobert Song who is a true gentleman --- he always takes off his cap before shaking hands with / embracing the opposing team's coach.

I still root for Spain, England or Portugal.

Quote from: Florestan on December 02, 2022, 08:12:11 AMI feel sorry for Uruguay. They'd have deserved to qualify, no less than Ghana would have deserved a draw. Anyway, this is probably the most surprising WC ever.

Yes, as I said before, that was probably my favourite group.

But Korea's winning goal was magnificent!

In general it's fantastic to see the surprises. Two African teams and three Asian teams into the knockout rounds. The world game is getting more global and is all the better for it.

The utter joy of the South Korean team and supporters was something to behold. Nearly brought a tear to my eye!

No betting, but I did draw Brazil in the office sweepstakes...

I really don't know. Of all those matches, Australia's task looks like one of the hardest, but a heck of a lot of strange things have happened in this tournament already.

Matches I'm most looking forward to are England-Senegal and Morocco-Spain.

I'm saying my prayers (and leaving offerings to whichever gods/deities will accept them) for the US today...particularly as from what I understand the Dutch have a very good team.  How do you think the Argentina/Australia match will go?

Hi both,

Tough ones to call, all of them.

This household kind of looks forward to an England-France obviously so we don't want any Senegalese or Lewandowski upsets, thank you...

As for ARG-AUS, Messi could bottle it under his country's pressure, you never know...  ;)

A very interesting round of 16; thinking about what happened in the groups, it seems there can be no totally predictable matches. Germany didn't pass, so provably I'll support Spain or England.

@Lisztianwagner Must admit, I was quite surprised to see both Spain and Germany lose their matches.  I guess that the way the official figuring is done, is that despite losing to Japan, Spain is still alive and kicking (no pun intended).

USA looking unable to beat the Dutch defense. They'll need the energy of someone like Gio Reyna to score anything in the second half but the American coach makes conservative, defense-minded substitutions. Real test of whether both team and coach can change tactics to unlock an unfamiliar defensive strategy.

Yes, Germany won against Costa Rica, but it wasn't enough to qualify, because although both got 4 points, Spain had a better goal difference; I'm sorry Germany didn't pass, but at least this unpredictability of results is what makes football such a wonderful sport to watch.

Precisely. I confess, though, that I have never been a football Germanophile and always supported whichever team they played against.  >:D I was mad with joy when, many moons ago, Romania beat Germany 5-0, albeit in a non-official match.

You have to admit the 7-1 game was magnificent!

Why, of course, when Germany is in top form they play superbly. It's just that of all great teams they have always been my least favorite. I can't explain why, that's just how it is.  :)

@Florestan Well, you have the right to root against. ;)

I agree Germany can play superbly (yes, 7-1 against Brazil docet), but unfortunately they have been in poor form since the previous World Cup: they didn't pass groups in 2018, they played a decent and nothing more European championship, and now they are out of the World Cup again.
