Prokofiev: Symphony No. 3 (Abbado/LSO, recorded live in Royal Festival Hall, June 1977) - Was craving this symphony and wanted to give another performance a try, other than Chailly/Concertgebouw (fave so far).

Wow, as if I didn't admire Abbado enough, along comes this.

Arthur Butterworth: Symphony No.4
A fine symphony if a little derivative of Sibelius (he seems to quote from 'The Tempest' at one point. Also, Bax and VW come to mind. Even so, this is a powerful and brooding work of considerable originality:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

One of my favorites by him. The final chorus always gives me goosebumps.

Indeed, I listened to this symphony recently as well and really enjoyed it - I hadn't remembered how good it is! The combination of piano soloist, chorus, and orchestra is quite inspiriting and compelling.

Quote from: Mapman on December 08, 2022, 04:09:58 PMStanford: Irish Rhapsody #2, "The Lament for the Son of Ossian"
Handley: Ulster

A mostly beautiful piece based on Irish folk music, with some angry outbursts.

A wonderfully dramatic and atmospheric work, with the "angry outbursts" you mention being quite uncharacteristic for the typically mild-mannered Stanford. The 6 Irish Rhapsodies represent Stanford (a frustratingly uneven composer) at his very best IMO.

Really a lot of fun, and a superb recording and surprising music.

Also a favourite Christmas CD of us, primarily because we are great fans of Maria Zadori, one of the best sopranos that ever graced our earth.

Nice pickings, Harry!

Quote from: Symphonic Addict on December 09, 2022, 01:04:47 PMRochberg: String Quartet No. 3

A monumental and arresting work. Among the string quartets by American composers, this has to be one of the best.

Absolutely! The contrast between the more astringent music in the outer movements and music of Beethovenian eloquence in the slow movement is so unique and compelling. I can say with some confidence that it's my favorite string quartet by an American composer.

Whereas the music flows beautifully throughout and is very atmospheric, it also tends to be too much contemplative most of the time for my taste. Not my favorite Franck I fear.  :-\

You won't be surprised to find that I agree with you. ;) I'm disappointed by this work every time I try it, even in such a good recording. Not only does it lack excitement and contrast, but it also lacks the sensuality I would expect from a work on this topic, to my ears anyway.

Pounds the table! Count me in as a fan of the oft-maligned 7th Symphony.
