Vivaldi: Gloria in excelsis deo, RV 588

Downloaded the above Box-set earlier in the week and have listened to several "Discs" worth - I am very pleased so far...

Mandryka

#85261

Exquisite modern piano playing, melodious and nuanced and elegant in the great tradition rather than the HIP tradition. Particularly impressive ornamentation. Delicate rather then virile, sometimes psychologically deep.  Needs good speakers (the sound is excellent) and a state of mind where you're ready to give it attention rather than expect it to grab your attention.

Good Morning from me too!
A bracing start to another chilly day.
Langgaard: Symphony No.4

Alwyn: 3rd Symphony.

A fine symphony and excellent performance from Hickox with a Chandos recording to match. But I find I dial in more with Alwyn the composer through his works with smaller forces and freed from a symphonic straightjacket.
Alwyn's piano works have been a revelation, pieces like 'Night Thoughts' and 'Movements for Piano' where Alwyn's imagination takes flight. Chandos are mistaken though in claiming 'Sonata ala toccata' to be a premiere recording as Sheila Randell recorded it in 1960 for Lyrita. 'Fantasy-Waltzes' at 35 minutes his most substantial and important work for piano,  'Three Winter Poems' for string quartet is as the title suggests a winter landscape. The third movement Adagio of the 1st String Quartet is the  most beautiful I have heard from Alwyn, or anyone else come to that.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Schumann: Carnaval, Op. 9

Another recent addition to my collection - I greatly enjoy Schumann's Piano Music, especially this piece.

Yes isn't it rather :)
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

The second disc in this three disc collection of Karajan's New Viennese School recordings, is absolutely stunning, the playing and orchestral textures intoxicatingly beautiful, both the Berg and the Schoenberg.

Dyson: Violin Concerto
I've owned this CD for ages but don't know it at all. Following a recommendation here I am now playing it and finding the Violin Concerto to be very impressive:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Edward Elgar.
Cello Concerto op.85 for Viola & Orchester.
Ernest Bloch.
Suite for Viola & Orchester.

Timothy Ridout, Viola.
BBC Symphony Orchestra, Martyn Brabbins.

The Suite by Bloch is indeed very moving like Jeffrey said and very well played.

I'm delighted that you think so Harry. I have several recordings of the work but this is by far the best.

I love that Karajan set too, there are such impressive, powerfully thrilling recordings, I hope you'll enjoy the rest! Karajan was famous to look for a beautiful, accurate sound in his performances, but he was masterfully able to deal with the strong, angular contrasts of the Second Viennese School as well.
