Henri Pousseur: Rimes pour differentes sources sonores (1958) - Rome Symphony Orchestra / Bruno Maderna, conductor, recorded 1967.

What a delightful surprise to find this piece, which appeared on an LP, The New Music. An early example of orchestral sounds combined with electronics (some might say crude), it brings back memories of an age long gone.

I like that CD very much. 'Where the Wild Thyme Blows' is a moving work.

Quote from: classicalgeek on February 06, 2023, 09:07:47 PMThat may have to be my next listen from the Prazak Quartet box! I love all the late Dvorak quartets (well, I love Dvorak in general  ;D ) The finale of op. 96 might just be my favorite movement from a string quartet by anyone!

Is that Skrowaczewski Bruckner cycle in print anymore? I can't seem to find it anywhere for less than a small fortune.

For the Skrowaczewski/Bruckner - it first appeared on the bargain Arte Nova label as separate issues of all the symphonies.  Not easy to find but they are still out there and for some reason usually cheaper than the Oehms releases of the same performances (which are very good).

for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

It's quite a while since I listened to this disc and I'd forgotten just how much fun it is. Wonderfully colourful music guaranteed to get your feet tapping.

This is terrific music that is well played here. The playing is consistently fluent which makes for very pleasant and easy listening sessions.

PC 1

Although Rachmaninoff is in my Top Five, I've never been a great fan of his first PC (nor of the 4th, for that matter. It can be described as "Rachmaninoff without the tunes": it lacks the big, sweeping, memorable melodies that abound in the 2nd and 3rd. That being said, it's not at all bad for an Op. 1. This performance brings about quite well the youthful and fresh spirit which informs it.

Piano Quintet op. 89

Superb performance of this super-sensuous, super-emotionally-charged work.

Piano Sonata No. 2 op. 94

A quirky yet very French piano sonata. Worth a try if you are into this stuff.

That's great, Olivier, it would be certainly worth doing, about Rachmaninov, Ashkenazy's interpretations are truly magnificent. :)
