Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622

Sharon Kam, clarinet
Czech PO - Manfred Honeck

Caught this in passing on Classic Arts today.

I know nothing about playing clarinet, but I can't imagine Kam's constant physical movement is terribly good for technique. Visually emotive perhaps, but in the end distracting for me.

That's an utterly amazing set. Hindemith was a brilliant conductor (of his own works).

Not my normal listening fare, but I am snowed in again today, so I took my opportunity to explore.

When I purchased Martin Best's Thys Yool recording used, the seller popped this other Nimbus CD into my order as a bonus for free. Beautiful music.

and this is the studio one:

Which one should I get?

I'd suggest the studio one, because Stich-Rabdall is in it. It's based on performances at the Aix-en-Provence festival of that summer (and INA has released the live counterpart).

The set bought has the "official" Don Giovanni and Le Nozze de Figaro. A good proposition if you can find it.

Superb performance.

Thanks. I'll see what I can find.

Quote from: Brian on February 16, 2023, 06:07:38 AMSettling in for a long winter's nap opera:

First-ever listen to Boris Godunov, in either this original version or any of the subsequent ones incorporating opera company's requests (for a love interest storyline) or the Rimsky-Korsakov edits. In general, Rimsky-Korsakov was bad for Mussorgsky's originality as an orchestrator, and the Rimsky version of "Bald Mountain" is much inferior, so I am hoping this untouched Boris will be an interesting listen.
I'm not generally a fan of opera but I make an exception for Boris Godunov, which I've had the good fortune to see performed two or three times. The Simpleton in the forest is one of the great musical moments for me and unbearably moving, especially when it comes at the end of the opera.

Up to the Sonata No 2 for unaccompanied violin, Ibragimova

Listening to this recording inspires awe, at the compositional technique and at the performance technique.

I don't know what amazes me more about the Fugue, that Bach could make contrapuntal voice leading seem natural on a four string bowed instrument, or that Ibragimova could make it sound effortless to play.

I agree Cesar - I'm now enjoying the Quintet for Strings from 1909.

Schubert symphonies, 3, 4, 5 & 6 -- Abbado.  First listen to the set, very nice so far...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.
