Symphonic Addict

Tchaikovsky: Souvenir de Florence, for string sextet

This performance is so masterful and, I could confidently say, perfect, that I haven't bothered myself to look for more recordings. Simply stunning.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Pulled out another set I haven't listened to in a while

CD 1--Symphony 1 and the Violin Concerto

Hollywood Beach Broadwalk

Symphonic Addict

Ornstein: Piano Quintet

Why this epic quintet is not more known just baffles me. It has great tunes, exotic lyricism, propulsive energy. An impressive composition all-around.

Interesting, PD. My copy has Pina Carmirelli with again Philippe Muller (cello). Not released on CD.

Yes, I listened to Schelomo too - a fine performance, which makes a great musical programme. I love the ending of Bloch's Symphony in C minor, where you think that it's leading up to a grand heroic conclusion, but instead it ends in glowering darkness (Shchedrin's First Symphony does much the same thing, as does Tippett's First Symphony, though in a less doom-laden way)

Scriabin: PIano Sonata no 5 in F# major, Op. 53
Debussy: Estampes
Debussy: Voiles
Debussy: Le vent dana la plaine
Debussy: Ls collines d'Anacapri
Prokoviev: Visions fugtives, Op.22 nos 3, 6 & 9
Prokoviev: Piano Sonata no 8 in Bb major, Op.84

The Debussy Préludes and the Prokoviev Sonata are studio recordings, recorded in Wembley Town Hall in 1961. The rest are live from the Italian Concert Tour of November 1962, though probably from different concerts as there are quite a few noises off in the Visions fugitives, which we don't hear in the other works.
The playing in all these pieces is fabulous, but my personal favourites are Richter's wonderfully pellucid Debussy.

Slightly disappointing to discover that this new release is not a new recording but dates from 1984, the same era as the radio download I already have (and may even be the same one. ::) )  Oh well, at least the sound quality should be better.  And the PC is new to me at least. :)

What's the music like?

Rachmaninov/Volodos: Morning from 6 Songs, Op. 4 no. 2
Rachmaninov/Volodos: Melody from 12 Songs, Op. 21 no. 9
Liszt/Horowitz: Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2
Schubert/Liszt: Litanei

Schubert/Liszt: Libesbotschaft
Rimsky-Korsakov/Cziffra: Flight of the Bumble Bee
Prokoviev: Three pieces fro Cinderella
Tchaikovsky/Feinberg: Symphony no. 6 - Scherzo
Bach: Feinberg: Trio Sonata no. 5 - Largo
Mozart/Volodos: Concert Paraphrase on 'Turkish March'

You will either like these transcriptions, some of which are undeniably flashy, or you won't. There is no denying, however, Volodos's fabulous virtuosity, nor his musicality. His own transcription of the Mozart has become something of a showpiece for other pianists as well. I really like it.

The Von Koch is really fine, one of my favourite 'new' symphonies of the last decade. Good old Roussel needs no further recommendation.

Given the use in Soviet times, the appearance of two "Radio and Television" orchestras doesn't bode well, does it?  ;)
