Ned Rorem: Symphony No.3. José Serebrier, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

Found this at the library, knowing nothing about the composer. Apparently, he was renowned for his songs, and he died last year at the age of 99. Sounds pretty good so far.

He is also famous/infamous for authoring a scandalous book.  ;D

Quote from: Dry Brett Kavanaugh on March 18, 2023, 01:26:15 PMPossibly, does a sharp sign at the bottom, rather than next to the note, indicate that the note is sharp in the previous, or later, measures?

I took a look at other versions of the score (https://imslp.org/wiki/Toccate_e_partite_d%27intavolatura%2C_Libro_2_(Frescobaldi%2C_Girolamo)). In the urtext editions, that note (measure 7) is sharp.

(On IMSLP, the first score is the one shown in the video; this particular piece starts on page 37.)

A light Schumann concerto with Grimaud displaying ample Fingerfertigkeit.  Nice for what it is, but not a contender.  The Burleske is comparatively better, and here I have heard only A-listers, but the work itself is meh.

Quote from: Mandryka on March 18, 2023, 01:15:26 PMActually they even look a bit like our sharp and natural signs now that you say it. I don't know if/how key was specified.

This one seems to have a flat sign, as well as a note which is both natural and sharp!

The accidentals (sharp and flat) only concern the notes they are written next to or to immedially repeated notes of the same pitch, so the interpretation of the "natural sign" must be wrong. It may alternatively be an indication of some kind of ornament.

Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

There's a new recording of music from this manuscript, released this month I think, from a group called Vox Clemantis. Here

So I noticed when googling for the cover!  :)
An Estonian group. It's on Spotify , so I might sample it.

Some lovely singing, but the most impressive element of this recording, for me anyway, is the stunning playing of Winton Marsalis. A nice programme, but, with a preponderance of fast, florid music, there is little variety.
