Lisztianwagner

Quote from: Løvfald on March 25, 2023, 05:26:23 PMAgreed 100%, there's much to enjoy from this assertive first symphony. My favorite symphonies are, however, the stirring 3rd and the more visionary 6th. On YouTube there's a different recording of the 3rd with uncut parts and I consider it to be superior to the one on Ondine. Here it is if you want to give it a shot someday:

Thank you very much! Then for the third I'll listen to the recording you suggested, I'm going to brush up all Melartin's symphonies.

Darker textures, more tension and melancholy (only broken in the more serene, lively Scherzo) compared to the bright Symphony No.1 , but equally enchanting and atmospheric.

The slow movement of Melartins symphony nr 4 " Summer" is a long and utterly ravishing Andante with 3 wordless singers - soprano, mezzo and alto.
Thanks for reminding me of Melartin....

One of the first set that Haydn composed for public consumption rather than for the Esterhazy family. I like it, but I have to admit it doesn't blow my socks off.
I had time for the DRD/Stuttgarters recording before heading off to church choir duty. Thoroughly charming piece, and I'm glad your post inspired a fresh listen, even if non-combustible of hosiery.

I don't know the music very well, and I confess to having found Gesualdo a challenging composer on the past. However, I think Maletto is irresistible, I love the fluidity and lyricism, the introvert and prayerful style, the luminous textures produced by the balance of high and low voices. I guess I'm a Maletto out and out fan.

It did not do much for me, I guess I am not a Maletto fan. 8)
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Isn't that a charmer? Separately, you've reminded me to revisit the Britten Cello Symphony.

Incredible playing in the elegies.  Just amazing really.

On to the sonatinas - and again, just amazing really.

A random discovery - I was just in the mood for some early organ music. Good pick though! :)
A Portuguese composer of significance: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_Rodrigues_Coelho

Thanks for mentioning this. There is enough music here to justify a purchase and the organist is outstanding. The organ is a baroque instrument much younger than the composer but sounds splendid all the same.
