Joining you with Bruckner's Eighth, but in Eugen Jochum's first (1949) recording from Hamburg (I read somewhere that this was the work's first commercial recording).

It's been ages since I last listened to Bruckner...   :-[

And what a coincidence, both covers are squint!  ;D

Roussel: Symphony No. 3 - Boulez/New York Philharmonic

Surprisingly rich bass for a Columbia recording.  Somehow this brings out a kinship with the Prokofiev 5th in my mind

By the way, the Boulez box is only $1399.99 on Amazon Maketplace.

Very good! I'd better grab the opportunity while it lasts! @ritter , by chance can you lend me 1,500 bucks for this noble cause? I could repay over, say, a 1,500-year period, if it's convenient for you.  ;D

Wonderful playing and sound. He omits most of the repeats, which leaves room for three substantial "fillers."

I'd love to have the box, but fortunately I picked up the earlier black boxes and have the great majority of the contents. Has material in the big box been remastered?

There's a smaller box with just Ravel and Roussel.  As much as we may scoff at Boulez's own music and how self-important he was about it, he was a remarkably fine conductor of both composer's music.

Now playing:

Friedrich Witt: "Jena" Symphony

That first disc has an old mono recording of the Witt Symphony conducted by Konwitschny.

As odd as it might seem to modern ears, this was at one time thought to be an early work of Beethoven.   Once the work was correctly attributed, poor Witt and his 23 symphonies seem to have been completely discounted and ignored.  Should appeal very much to Classical symphony fanciers.   The Gallois recording is really lovely.

No argument from me on this.

The Boulez Edition Ravel/Roussel box is on Qobuz, and sounds fine to my ears (listening to the Roussel again).

One of my favorite recordings if not my favorite of the 8th!  Great choice.

Yes I never tire of listening to the String Quintet.  It gets almost as much play as a Mahler symphony for me, which is saying something!

Btw, and relating to the concerts thread: I've been listening to Mahler's 1st twice during the last two editions of Enescu Festival --- not by my choice but by being invited to attend. If this year I'll be invited one more time (they'll be playing M1 twice this year, go figure!) I'll decline, much as I like it.  ;D

Annoyingly, I don't have that one from the black box series. (I have another 5CD set of Boulez/Ravel which does not contain the Roussel).

As you say, Qobuz has it and I guess I will buy the individual tracks of the Roussel, which will amount to about $6.
