Act I

This is an exciting version, full of passion and emotion. The main characters are superbly cast. I've read many reviewers complaining about Imhae Sun's soubrettish voice as being not fit for Ilia but I disagree. The voice conveys most convincingly the fragility and insecurity of the character. Bernard Fink is a splendid Idamante, now joyous, now dispirited and full of doubts, while Robert Croft sings a truly regal Idomeneo. The show is stolen by Alexandrina Pendatchanska, though, whose Elettra is truly mad wth jealousy and revenge.  The orchestral playing is just what one expects from the Freiburgers and Jacobs's (in)famous mannerisms did not strike me as particularly intrusive or annoying (even the almost continuous continuo, realized with fortepiano and cello, is eminently tolerable). Recommended, especially for @Que.

Sounds like what I hoped for - thnx!  :D

Very Beethoven style. Everything I hate. I mean sforzandi galore and big macho dramatic incandescent brio and elan and slapstick humour and in your face virtuosity  type of thing. Diabellical!

Yuck -- but it's good in its way.  But I need a dose of Josquin to recover.

Quote from: Irons on May 03, 2023, 06:14:09 AMI'm a fan of Patrick Hamilton, Jeffrey. After reading "Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky"  followed up with "Hangover Square" which I have just finished. Quite a surprise to see PH popping up here. The author in real life is as interesting as his, I guess, semi-autographical books.
I recently bought the book and intend to read it soon  (or as soon as I can locate it!) ::) . Thanks Lol.

Quote from: Spotted Horses on May 03, 2023, 03:25:42 AMHad a moment to listen to the first movement. Splendid is the right word! After focusing on Brahms' Chamber Music (String Quartets, Piano Trios) I was ready for something different, and this is it. :)

The Naxos recording, with the Tippett Quartet:

Excellent - I love the other movements as well - a true epic.

Last night - second hearing of this disc:

Grazyna Bacewicz
Symphony no. 3
Symphony no. 4
WDR Symphony Orchestra
Lukasz Borowicz

(on CD)

Right in my proverbial wheelhouse - rhythmically propulsive and energetic, especially in the outer movements, but with an innate lyricism throughout, and skillfully orchestrated on top of that. VERY impressive - I can only hope that cpo intends to follow through on "complete"!
So much great music, so little time...

An intense performance!

For some reason I missed a memo about the PBS series, Now Hear This, and last night stumbled across this episode with composer and percussionist Andy Akiho. It's about an hour, with excerpts from his fascinating output (among other things, he's a steel pans expert), performed by a range of artists.
