Quote from: vandermolen on May 03, 2023, 08:16:11 AMI recently bought the book and intend to read it soon  (or as soon as I can locate it!) ::) . Thanks Lol.

I think you will enjoy Jeffrey, I did. George Harvey Bone is a hard drinker as Patrick Hamilton was in real life, but deep down a good man. A constant theme of PH books is falling for the wrong woman with disastrous results. I wasn't aware that "Hangover Square" was made into a film.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

CD II; 550/571/586/576/597/705-713/540.
CD I, Christian Muller Organ 1727.  Grote of Jacobijnerkerk, Leeuwarden.
Pitch: 1/2 tone above normal, a'=440Hz, Equal temperament.
CD II, Christian Muller organ, 1738. Grote of St. Bavokerk, Haarlem.
Pitch; a'=435 Hz. Equal temperament since 1836.
Recorded, September 1994. TT= 153 minutes.

Both Organs sound extremely fine, and the playing has all the characteristics Beekman displayed so far. It is a relaxing pleasure to hear familiar works so well projected. There is no stress, no firework displays, no ego I might add, but just Bach in all its purity expressed, with all details clearly heard. I would urge every Bach lover to acquire this set if one may find it. Its well worth the investment. If it only be for all the fine organs the Netherlands harbours. Sound is good.

Well, reputation aside, I quite like these. Whatever his character or crimes, there is something listenable here. I wonder whether accusations of banality arise from disdain for his role in the Soviet regime as much as hearing his work. I am an amateur though, so what do I know?

I like Symphony No.2 in particular. I actually saw him once - Bolshoi Theatre on New Year's Day 1986 when a rather tepid ballet by him was being performed.

It is surprising to hear these works by Schütz, surprisingly beautiful melodies where the legacy of Monteverdi can still be heard, but where the later Schütz already resonates more. Enjoy it....

Florestan

Rossini - L'Occasione fa il ladro

Berenice - Susan Patterson
Don Parmenione - Natale de Carolis
Conte Alberto - Robert Gambill
Ernestina - Monica Bacelli
Martino - Alessandro Corbelli
Don Eusebio - Stuart Kale

Conductor - Gianluigi Gelmetti
Orchestra - Stuttgarter Rundfunkorchester

Director - Michael Hampe

Schwetzingen Festival, 1992

This is superb. Traditional costumes and make-up, respectful of the time and place, no Regietheater absurdities (I don't know if it was intentional or not, but Robert Gambill looked exactly like Donizetti in his prime). Strong cast, all singers in top form. Exceptional (and I mean it) acting, especially with respect to facial expressions --- in particular Alessandro Corbelli as a frightened and confused servant is a delight to watch. Spirited and exact orchestral playing from the Stuttgarters under Gelmetti. A most enjoyable and hugely entertaining production. Highly recommended.

On a Haydn Symphony binge!
CD'S 14-16.

No. 41/58/59/65/26/42.
The Academy of Ancient Music, Christopher Hogwood.

One has to listen in order to know how brilliant every single symphony is. It was some time since I have listen to them all, starting the first time in April 2013 till September 2014, and the second time, December 2016 till September 2017, and a third time started on May 2022 ongoing, and hope to finish it in 2023.
In every Symphony is a musical surprise of some sort, which never abates to fascinate me, for instance the second movement of Symphony No. 41, "un poco andante". Such brilliancy in the scoring. Excellent performances of course!

Now for something completely different:

Piano Sonata No. 1 in B minor

Interesting work. Cast in the Classical mould of three movements yet imbued with an unabashedly Romantic spirit, Chopin looming large in the background. Lovely.

Cross-posted from the composer thread:

I'm finally getting around to listening to this disc, and it is outstanding!  I'm particularly floored by the 3rd symphony (Dramatic, jaunty, lively, a great mix of heaviness and lightness!).  This is great music, and I cannot wait for Borowicz and CPO to release Symphonies 1 and 2!  The plan is apparently a three volume set of symphonic works.

I've been bemoaning the lack of recordings of Bacewicz symphonies for a long time and they are finally coming! :)

Magical. I was planning to put this on while concentrating on a big work project, but the outstanding artistry is too distracting!
