I rather like that book cover, as long as I bear in mind that it had no resemblance at all to Britten.

I imagine it comes from the occasion where Pears was taken ill and Britten himself performed the title role in Peter Grimes.

I had thought that this area of the forum was strictly for classical music discussion so was trying [hard] to keep an open mind as to what the cover artwork might be about. And yes, like you...not my cuppa tea--so to speak.

When I started (occasionally) posting to this thread, I noticed a number of posts featuring non-classical titles, so assumed that was OK. And it is "The Diner" area of the forum, after all...

If one wants big-time fugly cover art, I believe it's necessary to venture outside the classical genre. But maybe it then becomes too easy. For instance, Heino's discography is a veritable mother lode of kitschy album covers.

The thread is not strictly for classical, but in general the classical music world give us more than enough material.

If you head into other genres then the aesthetics are completely different. I mean, some of the classical covers that look "off" would be perfectly fine in another genre. If a classical album has a cover that's suitable for heavy metal, it's the mismatch that causes the problem.

OK - these covers are not ugly (indeed, Andrei, they are all handsome ladies) but -imho - quite silly and banal and they do, for me,  evoke humour. These photos are so close to the visual language of mediocre (fashion, beauty, make up,....) advertising that I don't see a musical message in them. The Balakirev / Nikitine cd is the worst.

Yeah... and if this was the thread for banal or mediocre covers I'd be right with you.

Or wouldn't, because that thread would be so many of thousands of pages long that I would try to avoid it.

Around here I was hoping we "aspired" to greater depths of bad design, not just banality.
