Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No.13 in B-flat minor, op.113, "Babi Yar". Vasily Petrenko, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir, w/ Alexander Vinogradov (baritone)

This symphony has taken a long time to get to know. But I'm starting to really admire it. This is such a damn good Shostakovich cycle; I'm completely satisfied with it.

My usual first choice of cycles...
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

The complete set is the release of the year for me, so far. Incredible sound in Dolby Atmos on iTunes. And I am half deaf!

It is certainly an impressive set, marvelously played! Blomstedt/SFSO is still  my point of reference for Nielsen's symphonies, but Luisi/DNSO was a splendid surprise.

Quote from: Harry on June 09, 2023, 05:16:20 AMI saw that one in the new releases on Qobuz, so what do you make of it?

I generally like her music, but these are new works, and I want to live with them a bit more.  But on first listening to Anchora, I liked it and hear it as a positive evolution of her primary style.

Allan Pettersson: Symphony No.5. Christian Lindberg, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra

First listen to this recording and the symphony itself. First impression, stunning sound quality. As for the music, for some reason what I'm reminded of is Robert Simpson's 9th symphony (which I ought to revisit soon).

Well something must be wrong for I still get the message that your inbox is full!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,

for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.
