Vladimir Ashkenazy & Philharmonia Orchestra

I think highly of Ashkenazy's Sibelius cycle and find him underrated as a conductor.

Nice, if I may ask, who's the conductor of your Sibelius disc? Ashkenazy's Sibelius recordings are stunning, they are highly recommended if you want to have a listen to his performances of the symphonies.

Completely agree, Ashkenazy's Sibelius cycle is one of the most beautiful I've heard about the works included; after Karajan, he's my favourite interpreter of that music.

I have this 2-CD set (It's a combo of Horst Stein and Ashkenazy):

I'll have to keep an eye out for his symphonic recordings of Sibelius--looks like you have a nice complete set of them plus other works!  :) Which orchestra or orchestras were they recorded with?

In terms of conductors of the symphonies, I have a bunch!  Some complete sets, some close and some bits and bobs:  Kamu (with the Lahti), Previn, Gibson, Colin Davis (both some with LSO Live and Boston).  A fun older 2-CD set of conductors like Beecham and Ormandy.  Some with HvK...L. Maazel..Bernstein, etc.  Yes, I've gone a bit "Sibelius crazy"...hence my chosen name.  ;D

PD

p.s.  The main draw matches at Wimbledon started today; so listening will be a bit more challenging to fit in.  :)

That's a very nice 2CD set PD. I remember thinking highly of Gibson's cycle - another underrated conductor.

Apollon Musagète  (1847)

I love this piece and especially in its complete performance as is the case here.
The performance is really great and a must for Stravinsky enthusiasts.

I was up extra early not too long ago and turned on the radio whilst I was in the kitchen.  They were playing Sibelius' first symphony and I thought "Oh!  I'm enjoying this"  When the announcer mentioned who the conductor was, I was surprised how good the sound quality was (been awhile since I had listened to it).  :-[

A friend recommended that Decca Double to me--particularly for the "Night Ride and Sunrise" recording.  I'm glad that I picked it up!  :)

Will you be watching any of the Wimbledon matches, Jeffrey?

Philharmonia Orchestra, they are provably the same performances you have on the Double Decca set, for what concerns the tone poems; it seems you're not certainly lacking of Sibelius recordings, but if you ever wanted to get another one, the Ashkenazy could be a very good choice. I wish Karajan had recorded all the symphonies, but alas he never did that.

Ah, I would have been surprised about the contrary, PD! ;D

Hi PD. I had the Horst Stein LP in my youth, many decades ago - it was one of my earliest classical LPs and 'Night Ride and Sunrise' was a highlight. I'm not a great tennis fan but might watch the later stages of the competition.

That's a great selection of the great and the good as far as Sibelius condsuctors go!  Not sure I've ever heard Previn doing anything except for the Violin conc. which he made something of a speciality in the studio - 3 versions I think.  I see he did a Symphony 2 in Pittsburgh but I've never heard that.  Any good?

Well, you might have to wait a bit longer; rain on Day 1!

I'll answer your question, but I'll do it in the Sibelius thread so as not to waylay things further here.  :)

La Damnation De Faust Selections

Frederica von Stade, Marguerite
Kenneth Riegel, Faust
José van Dam, Méphistophélès
Malcolm King, Brander
Chicago SO & Chorus - Georg Solti

I heard US tenor Kenneth Riegel recently passed. Thought I would take out a few recordings I have of him today, including his role as Faust.

I have the full version of this album, but also managed to collect the highlights recording too, for some reason.

Kirill Petrenko's take on Schmidt's 4th, with a Rudi Stephan piece tacked on.  Nice, beautiful sound, beautiful playing.  I may very well listen to it one or two more times.

I have always found myself perplexed by the Schubert Impromptus, but whether my brain has softened, or Haebler's performance was the key, it finally registered.

The Stein Night Ride and Sunrise was a great favorite that I had on a London Weekend cheapie CD.

Since replaced with the Eloquence box of all Stein's Sibelius for Decca.
