Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Chausson: Poeme for Violin and Orchestra.

Not the deepest organ notes I have heard in Saint-Saens 3rd, however, struck by the quality of the strings. The string accompaniment to the opening organ entry for example possessed a strong tingle factor. Dare say Saint-Saens had something to do with that too.

I found Le Rouet d'Omphale more of interest then Danse Macabre. I have held the suspicion that some of the popularity of the latter is down to the title.

Chausson's Poeme is a blot on the landscape. Perlman is a brilliant violinist, one of the greatest of his generation, but he is badly let down by the recording. Notes with this set are extensive, for example the Saint-Saens pieces recorded 1970, Salle Wagram, Paris. For Chausson, nothing.
What's the Honegger and Falla works featured in that set Lol? Thanks.
I like Martinon's old Prokofiev recordings on Vox/Turnabout which was my way into his music.

I found this easier to absorb than the 6th and 7th symphonies. Will have to revisit soon.

I like Martinon's old Prokofiev recordings on Vox/Turnabout which was my way into his music.

Booklet notes contain an overview of Martinon's recording career, Jeffrey. He was quite eclectic in repertoire but his record labels Erato, DG, and Pathé-Marconi were only interested recording French music. Vox stepped in and his wish to record Prokofiev was realised.

Honegger: Pacific 231, Pastorale d'été, Rugby. Une Cantate de Noel.
Falla: The Three-Cornered Hat. A 1972 live recording.

Franz Schubert: Piano Sonata No.21 in B-flat major, D 960. Alfred Brendel

If you like Brendel's Schubert also try his Haydn which is first rate IMO. 8)

I think this is the only recording on a modern piano of this music - Württemberg Sonatas - I could be wrong but I can't think of one. I am a bit of Jarrett fan so maybe judgement is clouded, I think he pulls it off tastefully and poetically.  Disarming, charming. The music is peak classical style stuff IMO - maybe the summit of classical keyboard music.

I've been enjoying that very much too recently. No great angle to his playing other than playing beguiling music beautifully I thought, but the pleasure I got from it was intense at times.

I shall look out for it; I have next to no Haydn piano music, especially after selling the Jandó complete set of the sonatas (a few years ago, stupidly, as I'd scarcely given the music a chance).

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.6 in A minor, the "Tragic". John Barbirolli, New Philharmonia Orchestra

Stunning interpretation and performance of this symphony, which has become one of my favorite Mahler works over the past 6 months or so. Barbirolli takes the first movement very slow and does Andante-Scherzo, one of the first to record it that way in the stereo era. Great sound of the mid-'60s NPO—their recordings from this era have a kind of characteristic sound to me, with dark, razor sharp strings, though they sound a bit different under Barbirolli than they do with Adrian Boult or Otto Klemperer.

Yes that was my first reaction but yesterday felt disappointed by what he made of the B minor sonata. I change my mind all the time about that sort of thing!
