We lost power for about a minute a full half hour before the storm arrived, and had a couple of flickers of the lights before and after, but so far no extended outage. Fingers crossed.

Thanks PD! I made it through... compared to many in this state, I've only been inconvenienced, not hurt. I've been looking for ways I can help with the cleanup, but so far most of the calls have been for people with tools, protective gear, or skills that I don't have. One exception is tomorrow in Barre - but we're expecting another 2" of rain tomorrow, and unless that forecast fizzles, I'm not driving to Barre in that.

No, that would not be a good idea!  More rain in the forecast too in my neck of the woods.  How much, no idea; however they are talking about it being heavy at times.

Good luck tomorrow if you do go.

Thanks. It was raining pretty heavily this morning when I would have had to leave, so I didn't go. We only got 14mm of rain, a little over 0.5", and it probably would have been okay... but that's 20/20 hindsight. The forecast was still for 2".

I suspect that we received your other 1.5".  :( Will have to check in with the weather reports though.

I remember two months ago at work, having conversations regarding how dry everything was.

Well, the drought continues apace, although the field corn and soybean crops look like no one told them there hasn't been any rain. Tall, green, and healthy looking.

My lawn differs greatly; brown and crunchy. On the other hand, it has been a rather relaxing mowing season for me! ;D Hope the weather normalizes for everyone!

And where I live it rains frequently.  I now have to mow every week.  I gave up on pruning and weeding myself (due to the heat and the sheer enormity of the task) so I found a landscaping crew, and even that was an ordeal.  They're all very busy because everything is growing so rapidly.

Last week there was rain in August, now a tropical storm warning as a hurricane approaches. What is Southern California coming to? (Technically I'm in Central California).

I lived in central CA for seven years.  It is not known for rain in summer!  That is wild.

Where I live we are still having days in the 90s (with high humidity) which has never occurred before in late August for the whole 11 years I've lived here.  I've always counted upon the truly hot days being over by mid August.

How are things where you are and to the south?  I did just see that Hilary was downgraded to a tropical storm.

Such strange weather...western Canada could certainly use some of the rain.  :(

How are things going for you in Vermont these days?  I imagine that it's been a nightmare for folks in the worst hit areas...trying to dry things out and rebuild.

They've had things like various types of fundraisers and setting up go-fund me pages for various farmers in the area.  Between a horrible late frost and a lot of areas getting flooded, a number of farmers have been hurting.  Areas (including community gardens) that had rivers overflowing into them have had to pull up everything due to concerns about contamination.  If this were at the end of the season, it wouldn't have been quite so bad.  I also read that some areas might not be able to be planted for years due to soil born diseases that can stick around for ages too.  :'(

We are in coastal Ventura County and so far it is just cloudy. The predicted storm track is well to the east of us, though the desert (Palm Springs, etc). For us rainfall predicted is 1 to 2 inches, not unlike a big winter rainstorm, maybe with higher winds than usual. The desert area might get 5 inches of rain, which would be a year's worth in one day. The terrain there and drainage systems can not absorb that, so it could be dangerous for people there.

Way too far away to feel here.

This guy's Hilary experience was similar to mine, but with a more spectacular view.

Quote from: JBS on August 20, 2023, 07:18:06 PMWhat about the earthquake?

It was centered in Ojai, which is 10-15 miles from where we are. It was definitely noticeable, but not alarming. I've experience two more dramatic earthquakes. There was an earthquake in Northern Virginia which I experienced in Maryand, suburbs of D.C.. And I experienced the Big Bear Earthquake living in San Diego, even though it was quite far away (Palm Springs Area). that was a 6.5.

It is surprisingly hard to get definite information about where the storm is centered now, but I think it is probably close to it's nearest approach to us. So far, it is like a winter rainstorm, but in summer.
