Second rerun, and I notice that my admiration for this composer is increasing. The sound world he creates, taps on all buttons. A worthwhile addition. SOTA sound and performance.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Quote from: Florestan on October 21, 2023, 03:56:42 AMHe opposed the terrorist policies of Robespierre and Saint-Just and incurred the wrath of the latter, who falsely accused him of treason. One of the many thousand victims of fanaticism and blind hatred.

We live in a world still governed more by emotion than reason. You know the story of Danton? On the way to the scaffold, the cart with Danton on it drove through the street where Robespierre was standing at the window. Danton shouted upstairs, "your time will also come" and so it happened.

Melanie (Mel) Bonis. (1858-1937)
Chamber Music.
Piano Quartet No.1 & 2.
Soir, Matin, opus 76.
Mozart Piano Quartet.
Recorded, 2006, at the Fürstliche Reitbahn, Bad Arolsen, Germany.

An absolute pleasure to listen to Melanie Bonis music. This CD gives an idea of the impressive level of her work, three works, whose outstanding quality refutes all the silly clichés about the supposed weaknesses of female composers. Above all this music is harmonically very advanced, imaginative and masterly in their craftsmanship. I have said this over and over again, sample it, and I am sure you will be convinced that she was one of the most important composers in her time, and indispensable for the completion of your musical library. Sound is excellent as is the performance.

They were furiously at each other's throats believing they were founding paradise on earth. All they did was paving the way for Napoleon's crowning himself emperor. I don't remember right now otomh who said that the only  valuable legacy of the French Revolution was the metric system.  ;D

Clara Schumann - Piano Trio in G minor

Three completely uninteresting and profoundly boring works.

I don't David. I'll bookmark it.

Before buying the Risonanza set, I only knew some of those cantatas via a Piau/Lesne twofer.

Not tried a lot of Kirkby but whatever I had has been more miss than hit for me as well, we'll see  :)

Don't know about actual availability, but the CD for the October 2023 (the one with Sean Shibe on the cover) has a nice performance of the cantata La Lucrezia by Megan Moore with the English Concert under Harry Bicket (along with some Handel opera excerpts and the RFWM).

Love this performance.
That is one of my favorites, too, and now so is this new one by Vikingur Ólafsson. (Although it's a very different interpretation.)

Steinway D

This is a very good collection of works by Biber, Purcell, Locatelli, and arrangements of plain chant by Raimbaut de Vaqueiras.
