The Op. 120 are two of only a handful of non-Henning pieces I keep in my repertory.

This arrived yesterday, good to have it now on disc:

Irons

York Bowen: Cello Sonata.

"English Rachmaninov" is not far from the truth. Definitely more Russian Romantic then English pastoral.
My ear was constantly drawn to the piano, not due to any deficiency of cello but inventiveness in the score for keyboard.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Britten: War Requiem: CBSO, Rattle
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Mozart: Symphony no.18

At the moment this box is perfect for whenever I want something pleasing that is not too invigorating or demanding.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Milhauds third violin concerto, Concert royal, op. 373, has never been recorded ,afaik.
It can be listened to on the website of the 1959 Queen Elisabeth competition/Brussels. Not the best recordings and Milhauds concerto was sharply criticised for being both atrociously modern and far too difficult.
If you want to listen, go to

https://concoursreineelisabeth.be/en/home/

and go for Darius Milhaud in the search function.

Jaime Laredo, Alberto Lysy, Albert Markov, Joseph Silverstein...were among the candidates. The NOB was led by Franz André.
