Quote from: Florestan on November 04, 2023, 03:59:24 AMI wonder if there is a recording of the violin sonatas and partitas played on the cello.

There's stuff like that on Youtube at least.

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

That's the very definition of an exercise in futility.  ;D

One way to read it is thus:

Beetho Venham Merkla

Vier-So (ie, Four-So in German)

Nate Afa

Nassiev

that is, the first line is the name of the composer, the second line is the name of the work, the third line is the name of the conductor and the last line is the name of the ensemble.  ;D

That's how I'd read it.

:) Please don't say that.. :-[ :( .
I'm sure you're (we're) not colour blind.... :)
For me (as a former publicity designer) this cd cover is both "classic" and quite elegant. I'd even say that my curiosity is stimulated and I'm "enticed" to read again....to read better. Yes, "Beethoven" and "Afanassiev....

I was reminded of Milton Glaser, one of the best designers ever!

Looks like when it comes to "classic" and "elegance" you live on a different planet than I do, Peter!  :D

And now that I think of it, the German title of the sonata is misspelled. The correct form is Hammerklaviersonate, without hyphenation. They hyphenated it because otherwise they would not have been able to fit the whole text into a 6x6 square. Very elegant indeed. ;D

Surprises are overrated. I'd like people to meet reasonable expectations.
I am now working on a discography of the works of Vagn Holmboe. Please visit and also contribute!

Oh, I can very well understand those things. The genuine string quartet repertoire is so small and insignificant that any addition, be it in the form of a transcription, is more than welcome. Valid also for the scarcity of genuine orchestral music.

I'm with @Madiel  all the way. Transcriptions had a functional raison d'être in an age where the only way to listen to music at home was either to play it yourself or hear it played by others. In an age when recordings of original works are abundant and dirt cheap transcriptions have lost any functional value. They are mostly vanity projects, even if (or perhaps more so when) big names are involved.

The most apt cover art that suits these pieces IMO. They match quite well I must say.

Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

That series (and a similar one dedicated to Milhaud) made some unknown music available to the record collector, but the production standards weren't very high, alas...

That was a very interesting series (I have several) but, indeed, production standards weren't the best.
Apart from cd's with quite rare works by Honegger, Milhaud, Chostakovitch and Prokofiev, Praga offered recordings by Sviatoslav Richter, some Katchaturian, Schönberg, Stravinsky, Lalo, Brahms and Beethoven etc.
The designers seemed to love surrealistic collages....

Imho they are not really bad, rather dated and generally the lay out is unrefined.
