Haydn op.74/1.

Currently the menuet. The more I hear Haydn's skill in avoiding regular 2-bar and 4-bar phrases, the funnier the joke in the "Surprise" symphony gets.
I finally have the ability to edit my signature again. But no, I've no idea what I want to say here right now.

I listened to about 2 hours of this 8.5 hour work today. More in the coming days!

Oh, I've listened to the entire piece at least 4 or 5 times, so I know what I'm in for! Every time I listen to it, I hear new lines and continual to marvel at his contrapuntal ingenuity, not to mention Powell's astounding performance!

Yes, this wacky cover again...  ;D

Disc 2: Missa Maria Zart. The highlight of this set.

Bliss: Quintet for Oboe and Strings.

English music for oboe and strings can be a bit samey farmer's gate. Not Bliss! Definitely a cut above.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

These are interesting pieces for violin and gamba, accompanied by (chamber) organ or theorbo.

Johann Paul von Westhoff, (1656-1705)

Sonatas for Violin and BC.

LES PLAISIRS DU PARNASSE.
Recorded from 4 to 9 April 2004, at the church of Frasnes-le-Château (France).
DAVID PLANTIER, VIOLIN.
MAYA AMREIN, CELLO.
ANDREA MARCHIOL, HARPSICHORD.
SHIZUKO NOIRI, ARCHLUTE.

A good performance and superb sound. Always had a knack for this composer. These sonatas by Westhoff, published in 1694, I think, are among the most fascinating pieces in the repertoire. Stylistic boldness coupled with inventive scoring. These pieces really belong to the the best that German Violin music of the 17th century had to offer. Each sonata and even each movement tells of the genius this composer possessed. Recommended.

It's all good...

A couple of posts in the British Composers thread has inspired me to listen to a bunch of Third Symphonies in my collection that are less trodden on. So far, since yesterday, my journey has taken me through:

Alexander Moyzes
Laszlo Lajtha
Karl Amadeus Hartmann
Hans Werner Henze

Vincent d'Indy (current listening)
