Greatest Violinist I never heard of...
It's all good...

This was rather interesting. A pretty good, well-written work that, whilst not a top-tier composition, does provide an agreeable listen. Wolf-Ferrari also composed a Sinfonia da camera which will follow later tomorrow.

That entire Wolf-Ferrari series from CPO is nice.

Correct. Well, almost correct. I didn't have a lot of Chandos. I've recently scored a pretty massive haul 8)

Then know from this day onward, Lydia Mordkovitch is a force and a legend. One of the best violinists that ever walked this earth. ;D
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Ah..;those were the days ...when VRT was still BRT(N), encouraged recordings of Belgo-Flemish music and Rahbari wasn't a friend of Gergiev...
Anyway, an interesting program. All three composers(conductors) prove to be very expert orchestrators. I hope sooner or later we get a performance of Alpaerts 1907 Spring symphony which - I discovered in an 1941 biography - has a last movement with  "vocalise" or cor anglais/cello solo... From the same period date symphonic poems "Cyrus" "Psyche" and "Resurgence", Later orchestral works include an Elegy for brass and percussion, a symphonic poem for flute and orchestra, 2 Orchestral suites (orchestrted piano pieces).
As for D'Hoedt: I'm definitely intrigued by Klaas au Pays de Cocagne, opera (Antwerp, 1926);  Narcisse for Orch.; L'lle de Cythere for Chorus and Orch.; La Vocation de Siddartha, symphonic trilogy; Dionysos, symphonic poem; Poeme pantagruelique for Orch.
As for Meulemans: afaik, several symphonies and other symphonic scores  await a first performance ...

Le Buisson Ardent

Quote from: Roasted Swan on June 11, 2024, 10:14:46 PMThose Holten/Delius collections were a fine series.

I agree, but I wish Holten could've recorded the concerti and have done a complete recording of Hassan (sans the narration of course ;) ). But we're lucky to have several volumes from him of Delius' music.

Quote from: vandermolen on June 12, 2024, 12:56:16 AMThat set is underrated I think.

Yes, indeed. It's too bad that Hickox didn't live long enough to finish this RVW symphony cycle. The Andrew Davis performances are pretty good, but I prefer Hickox in RVW in general.

Bassoon Concerto
Laurence Perkins, bassoon
City of Birmingham SO
William Goodchild

From this 2-CD set -

A good performance of Panufnik's Bassoon Concerto, but lacking the atmosphere that the performance on CPO had in spades (Michael von Schönermark/Borowicz) which I prefer over this drier acoustic from Hyperion.
