Ligeti: Nonsense Madrigals

My strategy for revisiting this box is to proceed slowly and miss out all Hungarian folk music, barrel organs, player pianos and metronomes ::) . It's sounding a lot better so far.

This is a perfectly good collection if you don't already have most of the works, but better performances can be had, especially Busoni's Fantasia Contrapuntistica--John Ogdon is the man for that job!

Rubbra
Symphony No. 4, Op. 53
BBC National Orchestra of Wales
Hickox

Rubbra will never get the amount of attention RVW, Britten or Elgar receives, but he composed some fine music. At his most inspired, he stands inline with any of those afore-mentioned composers.

One of Britain's finest composers, IMO. Symphony 3 has always been my favourite.

So far, the best things in this set are the violin concertos featuring Perlman.  The sitar concerto CD with Ravi Shankar was interesting, but I'm not sure how often I will return to it.

Very enjoyable couple of days with Tansman. Multiple more listens required 😊

I've become a big Koppel fan, and this does not disappoint.

This looks like a mighty intriguing program. Who is the Schmidt? Franz? Ole?

Mehta's other Mahler 2

Recorded Jan/Feb 1994.
I'd say it's at least as good as the one he did for Decca.

Haug: Symphony No. 2

The Norwegian composer Halvor Haug (1952) is a master at conjuring up some of the most haunting and vivid atmospheres I've been able to perceive from any work. This particular symphony seems like a depiction of an icy, hostile, lovecraftian landscape, and the way he uses the orchestra is to maximum effect (I quite liked a passage where the timpani have a prominent participation). In some passages wordless voices come out to highlight the inhospitable, and in the overwhelming climaxes some organ pedals add extra punch. Phenomenal work. It's magnificently played by the Norwegian Youth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Karsten Andersen.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Since the other two composers are Danish, I suppose it has to be Ole, also Danish.

Mielck: Symphony in F minor

A pretty good work by a promising composer who died of tuberculosis at age 21. Fate was rather severe with some young composers.
