Fiori Musicali: Messa della Madonna, excerpts from Secondo Libro di Toccate. Francesco Cera plays the organ mass on a modern reconstruction in the style of Antegnati by Daniele Maria Giani.

I found this disc rather to my liking, and played it already several times.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Again: ugly cover of the streaming issue to the left, the cover of original disc to the right.  8)

Fortunately the playing is really nice!

Tomorrow night I'll be listening to 3 piano concertos, at the Casa da Música in Porto.

It's the final of an international piano competition.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel
Piano Concerto in C Major, op. 34
Rondo Brillant in A Major, op. 56
Rondo Brillant in B-flat Major, op. 98

Howard Shelley, piano
London Mozart Players

What a great series this has been to explore Hummel, with one more to go. Each of the eight or so PC's are major works, and I suspect the piano sonatas would be as well. The pairings have been hit and miss, but these ones are strong. What a surprise to hear col legno from Hummel!

What would it take to hear one of these in concert? The right performer, at the right place, at the right time I suspect.

Quote from: Symphonic Addict on June 26, 2024, 01:10:10 PMWas listening to something on the radio and it turned out to be unexpectedly gripping. I had to wait for it to finish to know the name of the piece. It's the work that accompanies this symphony on this recording:

This epic overture is actually a tone poem from his opera Oresteia. Taneyev's most inspired orchestral work I reckon.

The Oresteia
is a masterpiece, which should be better known!  Let me recommend the Second Symphony and the cantata At the Reading of a Psalm, the latter a very dramatic and powerful experience!

Sir Neville Marriner & Academy of St Martin in the Fields

Since I was listening to Honegger I decided to try the Concerto da Camera this disc. It did not work for me. Invariably, when I listen to Marriner/ASMF I am put off by a lack of urgency in the music making. To placid and technically immaculate.

I switched to a recording by Turovsky, which I found more satisfactory although the piece did not have the Honegger magic for me. But following with the Prelude, Arioso and Fughetta, the magic was back.
