Be kind to yourself and get one.  :)
Quote from: DavidW on July 08, 2024, 03:54:47 PMWe had a drought here for a few weeks, but it has finally broken.  And there was a leak in my kitchen.  Had it patched though (hole in the roof).  Despite the sprinklers, my grass desperately needs the rain so bring it on!
Watching the evening news...man, Houston got hammered by Beryl!  :(

David, you don't want that kind of rain/weather!  Beryl now seems to have been downgraded to a tropical storm.  And grass is quite resilient; it will grow back.  Sorry to hear about your leak.  No fun.  :(

Quote from: DavidW on July 08, 2024, 09:42:52 AMTell me about it!  I'm sensitive enough that I need to use these expensive air filters that block out allergens. I also use a light touch on the AC (25 C), and even then I still suffer from congestion.

Exactly. She is back over a week now and no sign of clearing, bad headaches too.

Does she have problems with allergies overall?  :(

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on July 08, 2024, 10:25:07 AMYeah, I've been seeing a lot of rain in London (Wimbledon).  Not surprised that it's been the same in your area.  I do feel for you as lots of (not necessarily in terms of inches in your area) and not much sun can cause all kinds of problems--various fungal diseases, slugs, etc.

Not certain what you mean about "inflammation of sinuses"?  Is that the same thing as a sinus infection?  Alas, I often get those after flying somewhere.  I then end up having to visit a medical clinic and have to get some antibiotics.  :(  A/C does dry out things though...perhaps she needed to have drank more water to stay hydrated?  In any event, hope that she feels better soon.  Did she enjoy her trip overall?

p.s.  *Hot and muggy here (which I hate), so my a/c has been on quite often; not looking forward to my next electrical bill!.
*In the 90's.

p.p.s.  With global warming, you might want to rethink things.  Perhaps purchase an a/c for one or two rooms?

A mild winter and wet summer results in a slug paradise and they are on the march. Slug pellets containing metaldehyde banned in the UK last year so they are free to munch there way through all our crops. Happy days!

Ugh! I wonder whether or not there is some sort of natural ground cover that would help to deter them (as in something sharp or...whatever) that they wouldn't like to crawl over to get to your plants?

Commentators showed scenes of people lined up to buy strawberries and cream; reminded me that I had some fresh and local strawberries in my fridge (along with some blueberries and blackberries).  Having a bowl of them now--but with Greek yogurt.  :)

Had sinus problems in the past so a weakness there. I don't suffer myself but dislike air-con. Some restaurants have it here and we avoid them as they always set them at too low a temp. I get the impression it is like - we have invested in this so just so you know! You sit there cold and worse still the food. Air-con in UK is not necessary and we are not used to it and a bit of a shock to the system when visiting countries it is.

Quote from: Gurn Blanston on July 08, 2024, 10:44:18 AMSo the eye of hurricane Beryl just passed over, that was interesting. Not so much the 3 tornadoes within 10 miles. About 3.5" rain so far. All in all a super summer day.  :blank:
Just saw footage of flooding in Houston. Woof! @Brian ,  you okay?

Comparable distance from Boston, MA to Princeton, NJ.

For comparison, when you enter El Paso TX on I-10, there is a sign (if I recall correctly) that says, "Beaumont 832 miles."

Over two million people without power and at least 2 dead in Texas. In order to get assistance with their power grid, maybe Texas should move to another state to get the help they need, like they're making women do for healthcare.

Ha, yes, it actually rained about 0.25 inches here. It made for glorious weather - less than 80 degrees yesterday. We went for a walk around the neighborhood in the evening and saw 28 cats.

On the Texas scale that is like being neighbors!

That's a lot of cats!  Hopefully, all with homes?

Perfect weather here. The heat advisory which has been in effect since last week wasn't really needed, at least not in my neck of the woods.

Sunny and around 70°F, with a comfortable afternoon breeze, a classic bay area summer's day.  8)

Nice! 91° and 60% humidity here. Apart from getting out for some grocery shopping earlier, I've stayed in.

Another irony is that the power outage tracker run by Counterpoint Energy, a primary energy provider in Texas, is down, so you can't look up where the power is off. According to an article I read, people ar using the Whataburger app, which displays a map showing which Whataburger restaurants are closed. There are more than 700 Whataburger restaurants in Texas, and this is a defacto map of power outage.

Here in the Carolinas Waffle House is the litmus test.  They are everywhere and open 24/7.
