nor in competing for the favor of wayward friends.

Symphony 3 in C minor 'Divine Poem', op. 43
Philadelphia Orchestra - Riccardo Muti

I certainly hear Scriabin's 3rd as a transitional work.

And to round off tonight's listening, some piano music of André Jolivet, played by Yusuke Ishii. Mana and the Second Sonata.

Quote from: JBS on July 08, 2024, 12:11:37 PMI have the Complete Warner Recordings set, or whatever it's currently called.  Rather strange that they didn't include any of his Debussy or solo Chopin in your set. They did put in the film score he composed, which was well worth hearing.

François' complete Chopin recordings have been issued separately. It's wonderful. This set apparently brings together long out of print or never released material, hence the set's title 'Les Introuvables'.

I noticed there's a 3 CD set of his Debussy recordings. For reference the box I have is

The overture is merely the first 6 minutes of not quite 90 minutes of Rossinian pop and fizz.

André

Very much niche repertoire even for me. It grew on me as I listened till the end, but I don't think I'll put this in the machine often.

The symphony gets a fresh, unsentimental reading. Walter was a great mahlerian (a heart wrenching #9 counts among my favourite recordings of the work), but this symphony has been done to death by better orchestras, singers and yes, conductors. The songs are rather forgettable.

Exactly my feelings, André. Much as I love much of Florent Schmitt's music, these a capella pieces for women's choir are not something I really enjoy...

Good evening to you!

Eschenbach takes over 70 minutes for the symphony, but the performance does not drag.

I'd never heard of Ryabov before Hurwitz mentioned him in one of his "overflow room" videos.

Coming rather late to this fantastic work for symphonic wind band.

Love it. De Meij's symphonies are big favourites of mine.

Mennin is a fine composer and this SOTA recording clearly sets out a standard if it comes to interpretation. Very enjoyable.

Very enjoyable music!

Oho quite a bit more than that me thinks. ;D I was to tired to write in depth about it, still am, as a matter of fact, but his music I consider as brilliant, a composer unique!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Quote from: Roasted Swan on July 10, 2024, 10:30:58 AMthis is an excellent version of this elusive work - and the coupling is very good too.  I preferred it to the version in the Holliger set.

Same here. The best recording of anything by Koechlin in the last years IMO.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Quote from: Spotted Horses on July 10, 2024, 10:41:05 AMI know it is used in the seven stars symphony. In the coupling?

No, it isn't, and I don't want to imagine since the "artificial" sound of the ondes martenot would spoil the nature of that poignant work.

Mennin is top drawer, IMO. Predictably, #7 is my most played of his symphonies.
