Quote from: foxandpeng on July 15, 2024, 01:13:20 PMSecond run at this today. Taking a few days away in the English Lake District, and enjoying this symphony in the garden of our holiday let, wrapped up warm and dry against the evening's light rainfall.  Mountains, dusk, brooding music...

Enjoy your holiday in the Lake district. I envy you for the peace and quiet. Fitting music too! Take care.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Thank you, my friend. Sitting outside in the rain may not be everyone's cup of tea, but this evening has been utterly peaceful and connective to the natural world with wild rabbits a few feet away, bats circling overhead (surprising to me because of the rain), and the serenity of being a little more remote than usual.

We did ponder Amsterdam, originally...

Do not miss his Fifth Symphony by any means!  ;)

I look forward to it! Have heard 1 & 2 today, both of which have been very much my kind of thing. I anticipate reaching #5 before the end of the week 😊

Quote from: Symphonic Addict on July 15, 2024, 12:56:20 PMMy favorite recording of the Cello Concerto.
Agreed, that is my favourite for Lutoslawski's Cello Concerto too, absolutely haunting and thrilling recording; but also the composer's own performances with Rostropovich and Schiff are very beautiful.

Franck, Eduard (1817-1893) - German composer, pianist, music pedagogue, and father of Richard Franck - studied w/ Mendelssohn and most respected as a pianist and teacher; he was not a prolific composer and many of his works went unpublished which impacted on his reputation. So, I decided to pull my dozen or so recordings (attached), several MP3 DLs, for a listen the next few days - perusing Amazon briefly - does not show much new? Now listening to the DLs and will continue tomorrow w/ some of the rest - Dave :)

👍 A most excellent set, that one.

Symphonic Addict

In the mood for something special:

Symphonic Addict

Two piano sonatas and Fantasy for solo piano. The First Sonata in E major, especially, contains the most charming music in the disc. Pure naivety.

From the Mitropoulos set:

Prokofiev Violin Concerto 2
Francescatti/Mitropoulos/NYPO

The ad hoc arrangements of this set then give us its original coupling, in which only the soloist is the same:

Bach Violin Concerto 2
Francescatti/Szell/Columbia SO

Followed by a recording that was originally coupled with a performance of Shostakovich Piano Concerto 1 (Eileen Joyce piano Leslie Heward conducting the Halle) but is tacked on here because it's also Prokofiev. And for the only time in this set (I think) Mitropoulos appears as pianist and conductor. It was recorded in 1946, but the sound is so good it seems to be in stereo.

Prokofiev Piano Concerto 3

Stay away from Amsterdam, this city is, due to the massive influx of tourists, no fun anymore. Besides quiet and peace is an alien thing in Amsterdam, its noisy and filthy. No, in this respect the Lake District is heaven, it was the right choice, and I would have done and enjoyed the same things as you experienced. Sitting outside in the rain, yes, and wildlife in front, serenity all that and more.
