Thats why I have two fountains in my garden, a waterfall and a bowl, for the birds, it has a bubbling sound.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Vasks is sublime. Possibly my favourite living composer.

A piece of Olde Merrie Englande, Harry...

Well, a nice garden, anyway 😜

You would rejoice in it, plenty of trees, shrubs, flowers, wildlife aplenty, hidden corners, and most of the time very quiet.

Good for MH, good for retreat, and good for maintaining balance in such a busy city, I imagine! I do hope you enjoy greatly.

I have to correct a little in your narrative, I live in a village, 12 kilometers from Groningen. So no busy city, thank God. Farmland and woodland around my house, cows, donkeys, sheep, frogs, birds, foxes, bees, butterflies, squirrels, hedgehogs, wildflowers, etc etc,  ;D

TAMSIN WALEY-COHEN VIOLIN
HUW WATKINS PIANO

Recorded in the Britten Studio, Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, UK from 13th to 15th March 2017.

To start with this CD after a very busy week, my overworked nerves are getting a proper rest. Fine music, perfectly performed, SOTA recording.
I especially like the Four pieces by Josef Suk, just sample the Fourth movement "Burleske".

Hubert Parry.
Symphony No. 1.
Concert Stück.
London Philharmonic Orchestra, Matthias Bamert.
Venue St Jude on the Hill, Hampstead, 1991 & 1992.

I could not find a original back cover, thus I noticed, that in the box they omitted the Konzertstück, and replaced it with Symphonic Variations, equally good, but I have that on another CD.

The Symphonic Variations are my favourite work by Parry (along with the 5th Symphony). I prefer it to Elgar's Enigma Variations which I am over familiar with.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

HANS PFITZNER (1869 –1949).

Cello Concerto in A minor Op 52 (1943).
Cello Concerto in G major Op 42 (1935).
Duo Op 43 (1937) for violin, cello and small orchestra.

RUNDFUNK-SINFONIEORCHESTER BERLIN, SEBASTIAN WEIGLE.
Recorded in the Haus des Rundfunks, Berlin, on 18 –21 June 2012.

Hans Pfitzner to me is a composer to know, for he writes beautiful music, which the Cello concertos give proof. Every since I got hold of a CPO disc with some of his orchestral works I was hooked on his particular stance in musical terms. There is really no excuse for the criminal neglect of his music even in German musical life. The Cello concertos are beautiful, well performed and recorded.

The trouble with stray cats is that they eat a lot of small birds, and my wife definitely doesn't like that!

Orchestral works.
Volume I.
Bamberger Symphoniker, Hans Stadlmair.
Recorded: 2002 at Sinfonie an der Regnitz, Bamberg, Germany.

Still my set to go for, despite other attempts. Stadlmair and the Bambergers are superb as an interpretation. Enchanting, and correct tempos, with a fine feeling for tonal delicacy, and wonderfully balanced, multi-layered and highly detailed. Good sound too.

Alexander Glazunov.
Complete Symphonies.
CD I.
Symphony No.1, "Slavyanskaya".
Symphony No.2.
Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Bamberger Symphoniker, Neeme Järvi.
Recorded in 1983.

A set I still cherish. It was the first complete set I bought, and I remember how enthusiastic I was about the music, but when I played it and posted it, there was very little interest in his music. Did not Stravinsky say that Glazunov's music was the cornerstone to which all Russian composers must measure themselves! Still fine performances and good sound.

I agree - a set of fine performances in very good sound.  Overall Glazunov has been "lucky" with the recorded cycles - the Serebrier is very good, I love the authentic Russian sound of Svetlanov and Rohzdestvensky (not so keen on the over-rotund Polyansky) and the Otaka on BIS is likewise rather good.  Don't know the Naxos cycle.  Yondani Butt's partial cycle - 3-6 with the Philharmonia is genuinely fine as well.  But with all that said - when did you last hear a Glazunov Symphony in the concert hall!?  For reference at the BBC Proms (which start their season tonight) only Symhponies 5&6 have EVER been performed - No.5 got an airing in 2019 and before that it was exactly 100 years since the most recent performance of No.6..........!!!
