Mozart: Piano Concertos 21, 24
Robert Casadesus
Szell, Cleveland

I used to like these Great Performances covers. I remember we had some on cassette when I was a kid back in the early 80s

Thost tacky covers prevented me from getting any Columbia recordings for at least a decade.

Then why do they put a cover on it? :)

Koechlin, 12 pastorales

Placid pieces with subtle dissonance, and variations on harmonic "light." Challenges the capacity for repose.

Traverso

Alarius Ensemble

This recording is so dear to me, years ago I bought it as an LP, then with the Alarius Ensemble, now with members of La Petite Bande. The musicians are the same, the recording is identical but for commercial reasons it has been re-released under a different name. This recording still sounds very convincing and gives me the same joy as in earlier years.
This is really a recommendable recording, the playing is exquisite.

Quote from: VonStupp on July 24, 2024, 06:46:35 AMIt appears to be the only recording of the work, at least which I can find. Too bad, for it is hard to listen to the music with these soloists.

They are kind of ugly, but I have nostalgia. This recording even had some tape hiss. :)

Makes me think of Satie. Better than Satie!

I liked these covers back then. Also had some compact cassettes from these series, and CDs later. Recording quality was not so good but those were great performances as rightly marked.

Quote from: Symphonic Addict on July 13, 2024, 10:18:03 AMThree string quartets by three different composers: Martin, Elgar and Ysaÿe

The Martin is the best piece to my ears, followed by the Ysaÿe which is an arrangement by Jacques Ysaÿe, the composer's grandson. The Elgar, however, sounded less cohesive and without much direction in the first two movements. It's in the 3rd movement where I felt things went better.

I think more highly of Elgar's SQ than you do, but I think most will agree that it's not on the same level as his masterful Piano Quintet.

This simply is a hell of a ballet. It has to be one as one of his most vividly colourful and exotic scores. A sovereign delight from the very beginning. Recommended.

Absolutely! This and his other equally magical ballet-pantomime Signorina Gioventù are my two favorite works by Novák.
