Quote from: JBS on August 13, 2024, 06:30:12 PMAlmost all those works are long overdue for another hearing by me. I was going to say I don't remember Cantata being boring, until I realized I don't remember it much at all.
In comparison to many Stravinsky scores, the Cantata doesn't really have a striking profile. And arguably I have such clear impressions of the piece because I took three classes specifically targeting Stravinsky at both UVa and UB, but yes, I really enjoy the Cantata.

Don't know this one but I have these two, which are sheer delight:

Bachtoven

This seems to be a John Ogdon day, starting with one of my favorite recordings by him, a few clinkers aside.

And this arrived an hour ago. It's excellent, as one might expect.

Bachtoven

Quote from: Karl Henning on August 14, 2024, 02:01:59 PMSuperb piece, @Bachtoven !
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. He should write more chamber pieces, either with or without guitar. We used to be Facebook friends, but FB is now banned in Russia (he lives in Moscow), so we've lost touch.

"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

Liszt: Die Ideale & Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe

His last two tone poems and again, very different each other. The latter (composed in 1881-83) shows a mild degree of sophistication with respect to the previous twelve.

Having revisited all of these tone poems, my assessment of them is as follows:

Really inspired:
Tasso, Les Préludes, Hunnenschlacht

Nearly as great as the three above:
Héroïde funèbre, Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe, Hamlet

Good, but not too strong:
Mazeppa, Festklänge, Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne, Prometheus

The least interesting and/or most banal:
Die Ideale, Hungaria, Orpheus

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

It would not surprise me! Appreciations and perceptions are subject to personal tastes and they may change or not over the time.

Superb playing and sound. She plays a very demanding program, including Nikita Koshkin's Sonata 2.

Dvorak: Piano Trios 1 and 2

Is it normal, or even legal, that anyone like him has had this skill for genuine melodic inventiveness? Astonishing to say the least.

A superb performance of The Bells. So is it with the Symphonic Dances I suppose, but I don't respond to this work as much (except its first movement
).

For me it's the reverse. Or at least I've yet to hear a performance of The Bells that makes me want to hear it again.
