Symphony, Opus 5.
All info on the front cover.
Recorded 2017.

A spectacular Symphony in SOTA sound. I am a great admirer of this composer. A work of strength, insight, and visionary.

Your advocacy made me pull this one from my shelves, Harry! Very little Mortensen seems to be available. The symphony is a very fine work indeed. Long-breathed themes, beautiful instrumental solos, sumptuous orchestration - what's not to like ? Quite surprisingly, it has been recorded 3 times. I don't know this disc. I have the symphony and a few other works on Simax under Terje Mikkelsen. It's also been recorded by Mariss Jansons with the Oslo Philharmonic.

Listening to this right now:

Symphonic Addict

Langgaard: String Quartets in A-flat major and No. 2 (from the Dacapo set)

Lovely and quirky music that doesn't follow a more traditional development of ideas, but rather they flow freely or in an episodic manner. I can understand that some listeners struggle with this way of presenting the musical discourse and find it, say, weak or discouraging, but somehow I do like it.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

After a steady diet of digital audio, I needed a break, so I turned to one of my favorite recordings. I have yet to hear better, more realistic piano sound from any medium than on this 2-LP set. His playing is spectacular, too.

Nielsen: Symphony no.1

(I'm actually using the Dacapo Masterworks box, but same performance.)

What a good symphony this is. Nielsen was a member of the orchestra at the premiere, what an experience that must have been!

A rather endearing work:

Clavier Übung - beginning

BWV 552.1 is one of those organ works by Bach that always puts me in a jubilant mood.
Bach must have been in an exuberant mood to give shape to this musical yearning invocation filled with the joy of life.
A great opening to the Clavier Übung

Both composers leave a seal of excellence on this recording. Captivating works of great beauty, perfectly performed, and recorded.

A truly delightful project. Well performed and excellently recorded. Insightful, detailed in expression, and well articulated in a broad sense.

Tubin: Balalaika Concerto

To be honest, this recording doesn't convince me that the balalaika is a viable solo instrument in a concerto. Maybe it would work if it was spotlit more strongly. No idea how it comes across in an actual concert, or to put it another way I don't know whether I'm underwhelmed because of the players or the recording engineers.
