I checked, and this is the only recording of this mass once attributed to Dufay. And a very satisfying one - one for the shopping list.... :)

Quote from: Mandryka on August 25, 2024, 03:06:48 AMI like it very much -- the thing to say is that it's a real quirky set of performances in a way because of the gothic style. But I like it, he's got an affinity for the music I think.

I quite like it as well!

Not a composer I know well. Possibly the wrong sort of energy for a late night first listen, but this is pretty good so far. It may be reflective of real pain and emotional turbulence, but I was pretty wide awake and prepared 🙂

Corigliano's grappling with loss and harrowing mental anguish is well described in this work. Anything with a reflective cello melody like Guilio's Song, tugs at the heart strings and is a helpful relief from Corigliano's torment.

It's a very fine work. I heard it here in Montréal in 2004. The composer gave a talk in the lobby after the concert. The kind of night to remember a long time - although apparently Lang Lang played a concerto in the first part of the concert, something I have no recollection of. I guess my memory made a selection of what was really important.

Currently embarked on Siegfried, 1953 Bayreuth production. Deluxe cast : Windgassen, Hotter, Kuen, Mödl, Streich, Neidlinger, Greindl, the crème de la crème in each role.

Siegfried has slain Fafner. Previously, the Forging Song was thrillingly sung (not shouted) by Wolfgang Windgassen - flawless legato, strong and pure top notes, stentorian, laser-focused heroic tenor tones. Excellent sound, making it hard to believe it's a live recording from 1953.

It's a long opera, so Windgassen's 'Das ist kein mann' and  Martha Mödl's 'Heil dir Sonne' will have to wait another day.

As Mandryka already pointed out, this recording contains another anonymous English mass: the Missa veterem hominem, like the Missa caput on vol. 4 also from the 1440s and closely related. Good stuff...
