Messiaen: Méditations Sur Le Mystère De La Sainte Trinité

andolink

A very enjoyable new addition to my music collection. Carlo Mannelli (1640-97) is extremely and undeservedly under-represented in the current catalogue of recorded Baroque music. I encourage anyone who loves music of this period to give it a try. It's very well performed and recorded.

Added to the list!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I found to my surprise that I have almost all recordings on Hyperion from Gothic Voices. I bought them all for 4 euro's a piece. My review notes were all very positive. An awesome series.

A German Bouquet.
See back cover for detail.
Recorded June, 2008 in Nichols Hall at the Music Institute of Chicago, Evanston, Illinois.
Positiv Organ: Gerrit Klop, Netherlands (Schmelzer, Krieger, Bach Fugue, Erlebach I and VI)
Tuning: Unequal temperament by David Schrader, based on Werckmeister III.

A program that extends far beyond Bach and Buxtehude. It offers rare repertoire by Johann Schop, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Georg Muffat, Johann Philipp Krieger, Philipp Heinrich Erlebach and Johann Georg Pisendel, some of whom were among the greatest German violinists of their time. And this ensemble playing on Historical instruments, makes the most of it. Most of the time I am not disappointed in what Trio Settecento records. This is an instance were performance and sound have a ideal bond. Recommended.

I think that Rossler created St Sacrement for Messiaen.

Another strong performance.

I just realised I skipped vol. 7... But since I'm in bed with Covid, there is plenty of time to rectify that.  8)

Granville Bantock.
Sonatas for Cello and Piano.
See back cover for details.
Recorded in July 2000.
Second rerun.

By far the best interpretation I heard of these works, absolutely gorgeous. And well recorded too. Seek no further if you like these works. It does not get any better as this.

Poulenc

Chanson Gaillardes (1925-26) - at this point Poulenc has got his mature characteristics. The rascal side of his nature leads him to set poems that are pretty rude. The fast songs are a tumble of words, and the slow songs are beautiful and moving... even the one that suggests masturbation with a candle (no, I am not kidding).

Trio for oboe, bassoon and piano (1926) - music that similarly shows the range of Poulenc's moods. At times sparkling, at times gorgeous.

Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Must be written for female voice, I reckon...  ;D

No, but that particular poem is about a woman.
