It has been a long time, but I recall liking the Keller Quartet:

Symphonic Addict

Eshpai: Symphonies 7 and 8

The last two symphonies by him that are available on record (there's a 9th Symphony for chorus narrators and orchestra, but I don't know any recording of it yet). A solid symphony cycle overall. It baffles me that this composer hasn't received the attention he deserves.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Good to know. I will check it out. Can't really get too much of this piece.

Quote from: hopefullytrusting on August 29, 2024, 05:19:12 PMListened to three requiems today:

Brahms (Solti with the CSO)
Mozart (Solti with the WP)
Berlioz (McCreesh and company)

Out of these three, I only loved the Brahms.

I found the Berlioz okay, and I found the Mozart boring.

I'll definitely be listening to the Brahms again.

The other two, likely not.

Might mean something that the one you liked was the non-liturgical one.
Or it might mean nothing...
I would suggest trying the Mozart with a non-big band conductor like Marriner or Gardiner or Hogwood. Mozart is one those things were bigger does not mean better. Also the Solti was recorded live for a special concert so it was a bit above average in the pomp and circumstance department.

Well, for me, all that stuff is French to me. I'm simply listening to the music; I do not understand the words or their relevance. As a composer, though, Brahms is one of my favorites.

I took your advice and listened to the Marriner and the Hogwood, and I must say - you were spot on. The Hogwood, especially, feels like a completely different piece. It is intricate, has nuance, and its opening is something I've never heard before (going to listen to it again later today). It was so different I almost thought I got the wrong recording, but it was it, so I still like the Brahms more, but I will be listening to Hogwood's interpretation again, as I enjoyed it that much.

Many thanks for that. :-)

Orlando Gibbons.
Fancies for the Viol.
Fantazias, In Nomine, Galliards, Pavans, & Go from my Window :)

I would say sublimely done. One of the most accomplished musicians of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras was without doubt Orlando Gibbons. Gibbons made his contribution to every genre of vocal and instrumental music. In the field of fantasias for viols, he wrote numerous works for combinations of two to six instruments, creating almost limitlessly imaginative structures that show clear traces of the Italian style.
Rarely have I heard a consort playing with such perfect homogeneity and precision, a case of perfect playing culture meets the highest level of instrumental craftsmanship. A rare treat! Fine recording too, you keep listening to such perfection.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,

for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

A few months ago I had Covid too. I can think of better things to do as being afflicted with it.  I hope things are progressing in a positive way?

The paucity of his work available for streaming doesn't help. I have been following your posts with interest, but Eshpai is somewhat elusive..

Carlo Mannelli 1640-1697.
Trio Sonatas Op.3.
Ensemble Giardino di Delizie, Ewa Anna Augustynowicz Baroque violin, artistic director.
Recording: 24-27 March 2022, Saint Francis Church, Trevi (PG), Italy.

The forgotten art of a 17th century Roman master it seems. For I never heard of him, and yet he composed fine music. And it gets a Royal treatment on this CD. He is sort of a free thinker, concerning style order and the arrangement of ideas. He is fast and furious in most places, and certainly a lot of fun. Melodically there is a lot to discover, and if your not partial to the performance style which would be appropriate at his time, then by all means Mannelli is a composer to listen to. The music is characterized by a fresh melodic inventiveness and sometimes daring harmonic surprises, a great richness of sound, and unexpected, expressive chromatic phrases. And if that is not enough, well then nothing is to be done to lure you into the world of this composer. Highly recommended. The sound is excellent

I hope so! This round feels quite rough.

Mozart: Concerto for flute and harp

Interesting sonorities, certainly. Maybe not peak Mozart, but pleasant.

Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

part of this box with the organ on wich Messiaen played himself for many years.
The organists in this box vary but are all familiar with Messiaen and his organ works. Unfortunately OOP.

You know that this is his second recording of Livre de Saint Sacrement, the first for BIS?

I always waited for this series to be issued as a box set, a reissue that never materialised. Fortunately with streaming the wait is over.... 8)
