And I a child enough of that time (or more precisely a teenager of that time--1974) to think it's good art. However the color used for the title makes it a bit hard to read, since (especially the first two letters) blend in too much.

Not so much bad cover art (perfectly fine, although the relevance escapes me) as bad editing - spot the difference between the physical product:

and the download:

I've always liked (if not quite loved) the Herbie Hancock cover. My only problem is him facing the camera/observer and looking like he's about to wink at us.

I find it okay too and lets face it: That's what album cover art used to be like half a century ago. Mankind used to be futuristic/optimistic about the future around the time of the Moon landings and it was reflected in culture. That's why there's spacecrafts, lasers, planets, space etc. in many places. Ironically there was no way to create cover art in computers (no photoshop, gimp etc.) and the art was created by hand. The result is 70s retrofuturism. It is not bad nor good. It just is.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Sometimes I think this thread has become so well-known that record companies know we'll give them free advertising if they do something goofy on the cover.

Now that I can imagine.

Wingdings font would prove it.

It seemed like Sony turned a professional musician into a joke just based on his name. What an insult. ::)

It's his shtick.  For instance, his glasses are his "invention".  Here's some ad copy:

Roman Kim is one of the most controversial violinists of our time. The young Cologne-based virtuoso is known all over the planet for playing with prismatic glassed covering half of his face and held in high esteem by legends of violin-playing. Ivry Gitlis, for instance, describes his art as "one of the most incredible playing I have heard since I was born!" During his short career, Kim has expanded the technical boundaries of his instrument, in order to follow his extreme expectations on himself. Following the paths of Niccolò Paganini, he is capable of interpreting Bach's "Air" with all its parts on his instrument — in fact, this got him famous on YouTube, even before he started to play around the globe.

He and his agent(s) are doing what they want to do.  They are not concerned with what connoisseurs on GMG may think.

Only Todd can make having taste sound contemptuous.

I love that his own advertising calls him controversial. That tells you exactly what they are trying for.

It all started with Paganini, really...
