People treating music as background has been the curse of every age. But only in fairly modern times has it been possible for us to listen to music without other people around to ruin the experience.

Has anyone else heard this extraordinary recording?

I have, indeed. It's in this box set I bought about year ago or so:

I also highly recommend his recordings of the 3rd and 6th symphonies on Harmonia Mundi:

A recital by pianist Françoise Gobet, initially released by Disques Véga in 1958, and reissued on CD by Forgotten Records.

The fact that the most widely known work on the programme probably is André Jolivet's Mana says quite a bit...  ;D

From this set -

All the talk of the Schumann symphonies on this thread lately has caused me to revisit some of MTT's cycle. Some may find MTT a bit too refined perhaps. But I think this music plays to his strengths more than detracts from them. His tempi are a bit lax, too, but the gorgeousness of the music-making is undeniable --- this set is an aural treat and there's always other performances that offer a more fiery approach like say Kubelik or Bernstein if you would rather listen to those. I'm rather pleased that MTT recorded these symphonies and I appreciate his approach in this music the more I listen to it.

Anna Korondi, soprano
São Paulo SO & Choir - John Neschling

Renée Fleming, soprano
Moscow RSO & Chorus - Alfred Heller

I hadn't really meant to listen to both of these, but I did. I find there is little to choose between the two, other than more music with Neschling. Wonderful music either way.

Piano Works.
See back cover for details.
Aude St-Pierre, Piano.
Recorded at Kleiner Sendesaal and Klaus-von-Bismarck-Saal, WDR, Cologne, Germany October 2021 (Track 25–28) March, 2023 (Track 1–24).

The works of Maria Herz, who was born in Cologne and died in exile in America, stand out as special treasures among the abundance of good music by female composers that has finally returned to the public's attention in recent years. The Canadian pianist Aude St-Pierre presents piano music by this extraordinary composer. Herz's development from her early Chopin Variations and the Ländler op. 2 to her Sonata in F minor is simply breathtaking and foreshadows the never-realized future of a composer who was silenced too soon.

Fascinating, that's all I can say. Graceful, reflective playing, recording in aural perfection.

Absolutely NOTHING to do with this recording Harry - but recently I listened to this disc - and it struck me as being the kind of thing you might like a lot (if you don't know it already!)

really lovely sunny music........

Did not know that recording, will try to find it. Thanks for the pointer, I like this composer very much.

@Roasted Swan , I am sorry to conclude that this recording is not to be found on Qobuz. Luisa Adolpha Le Beau. For that matter not much of her on the streaming services. A pity, it looks quite interesting.
