I bought this set last week. I have been keeping my eye on this Poschner cycle and I'm glad I held out and waited for the box set. Definitely looking forward to diving into it --- what do you think about it thus far?

The only other recording by Gothic Voices that I have on disc. And a great recording. It is clear that I missed out on a lot of great recordings. Once I got deeper into Early Music my focus tended to move away from British ensembles. In the case of Gothic voices that was unwarranted.

Quote from: brewski on September 21, 2024, 03:43:32 AMThank you for citing this, since I wasn't able to catch it (and alas, won't be able to watch the second part live, either). But as is often the case, they archive everything, so I will look forward to watching later.

Out of the second round, I really enjoyed Khanh Nhi Luong's Prokofiev 3, a truly superb performance.
It's a very good thing they archive the performances, indeed; we will both be able to catch up. I will be watching some of the semi-finals later today and revisit some of the performances I found the most memorable. And I will certainly re-watch the Rachmaninov 4 and Prokofiev 3 from the finals.

Do share your impressions when you watch! 8)

I love these works. Good morning, Rafael! ☕️

Quote from: André on September 21, 2024, 03:06:27 PMRe: Nagano's Bruckner 8. Yes, I've known and loved it for years. It's the most impressive and profound interpretation of the original version of the work  (the one with the first movement's loud coda). He makes it sound like a towering masterpiece.

Another winner by Steven Devine - the playing is absolutely brilliant: poised, expressive and engaging with great attention to detail. Krebs proofs to be more than a Bach Sr. epigone, using modern styles and influences.

Quite a few versions (Tintner & Inbal for starters) - see this disocgraphy......

I just spotted something unusual - this discography lists Nagano as being nearly 25 minutes LONGER than Inbal - are there other cuts...????

Tubin: Symphony no.7

And so I've reached the end of the Tubin discs I bought (in June 2023 no less, not bad if I deduct 3 months away!), ending with perhaps my favourite disc where I enjoy all 3 works quite a bit.

It's quite possible I'm going to turn around now and do a Tubin chronology thing, incorporating all the other albums I can find out there on streaming. His musical language definitely does seem to change over time.

An old LP preserved on the internet...

It's actually extracts from 2 different Danish LPs put together on an American label. They did this at least a few times (edit: and I'm getting the impression that taking European recordings to the US was pretty much what the Turnabout label was for). I'm currently on the Nielsen half, soon to move to the Holmboe half.

I also highly recommend his recordings of the 3rd and 6th symphonies on Harmonia Mundi:

Yes, excellent performances!

Not many recordings of the original 8th. The big champion is Inbal. The only two I've heard are Tintner and Gielen (I'm not really a fan of either).

Edit: I just realized that Roasted Swan literally said the same thing. I need to read ALL posts before replying.

This is one of the reasons I am keen to see the Nagano booklet.
