Stravinsky, Igor - Dumbarton Oaks - actually now a wonderful house museum in Georgetown (Washington, D.C.) that we visited probably in the 1990s - Mildred & Robert Bliss commissioned the work for their 30th wedding anniversary - "The commission had been brokered by Nadia Boulanger. She also conducted the May 8, 1938, private premiere in the music room at Dumbarton Oaks" (Source).  Dave :)

I just bought this DSD64 download from NativeDSD--wow. It's one of the most realistic harpsichord recordings I've heard, and her playing is fantastic. I previously heard only Suite No.1 played in a guitar transcription by David Russell. It sounded great, but the harpsichord original has slightly fuller textures. So far, the physical version has not been released.

I've only recently discovered the Stravinsky 'Apollon' music - a great discovery.

So, what do you think about the music and the performance?

Revisited one of my purchases of the century.  It easily retains that status.

Quote from: JBS on September 25, 2024, 05:41:31 PMMore first listen to Wellesz's symphonies. Tonight it's the Third and the Fifth.

The cover art is Egon Schiele's Stadt am blauen Fluss IIe, dated 1911.

A very beautiful and evocative Schiele painting! It, albeit privately owned, is on permanent loan to the Austrian National Gallery in Vienna, but is not usually exhibited to the public. It was, however, part of the 2018 jubilee Schiele exhibition, marking the 100th anniversary of his death, at the Leopold Museum, where I had the opportunity to see it in person. The actual colour of the water is a mesmerizing dark blue, not almost black as that photograph suggests.

I hope you're enjoying the Wellesz Symphonies!

Currently listening to the Brahms Violin Concerto, with Gil Shaham (BPO/Abbado).

I don't know the meaning of this expression. Good? Bad? Mediocre?  ???

I listened to the final CD of the set this morning. They are indeed very good music.

All four CD covers in the series use art by Schiele.

First listen to these works.
CD 1
Concerto No 1 in b Flat minor Opus 32 Scharw.125 (1876)
Concerto No 2 in c minor Opus 56 Scharw.126 (1881)

Just noticed Scharwenka used minor keys for all four of his piano concertos.
