A really impressive Quejas - @Todd let me know if you want it.

Has the pianist behind the mask been identified?

It is illegitimate and therefore worthless.

Years ago, I bought the cheap RCA Isserlis box.  This disc was included.  I listened to it once at the time.  This is my second listen.  There is a 90%+ chance it is my last.

Continuing with Tchaikovsky last night and this morning - Argerich in the first concerto (in my collection for decades) and Jerome Lowenthal doing all three + the Concert Fantasy - these DDD performances from the late '80s really stand up well.  Dave :)

Bach

You have been involved with Bach's music on so many levels for so long. Have you come closer to Bach?
'Yes. The more you immerse yourself in the person and the more you work with the music, every time you work on pieces, even if you already know the pieces well, you get to know Bach better. Every time I perform Die Kunst der Fuge with Tini [Mathot; harpsichordist and Koopman's wife, ed.], I discover something new. And if you're not close enough yet; who knows in ten years. You do your best, you try to orient yourself, and you do everything out of love for Bach's music, for me the greatest musical wonder of the world that has ever existed.'(Ton Koopman)

Manuel Rosenthal conducts Ravel: Alborada del gracioso, Rapsodie espagnole, Ma mère l'oye (complete ballet), La Valse, and Boléro (all with the Orchestre du Théâtre National de l'Opéra de Paris). One of the great traversals of Ravel's orchestral music ever recorded !

CD 3 of this treasure trove of a set:

« Et n'oubliez pas que le trombone est à Voltaire ce que l'optimisme est à la percussion. »

"Original Version" (ie not cut) of No.2 OK, Tchaik was dead before he completed No.3 so "original version" is a tad academic.  Which only leaves No.1 - what constitutes "original version" of that?  Any significant differences or just fiddling a bit with the solo part?!

Symphonic Addict

Zimmermann: Sinfonie in einem satz (1st version)

Powerful stuff. An example of what a purposeful modern symphony should be.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Heitor Villa-Lobos
Piano Concertos 1-5

Cristina Ortiz
Royal PO - Miguel Gómez-Martínez

I am not in love with these piano concertos, which I have been listening to over the week.

With repeated listenings, I become used to Villa-Lobos' musical patterns and enjoy them more, but I also get a sense of sameness amongst the five concertos. Maybe I could call 4 & 5 my favorites of the set, but not with any strength of cause.

Bachtoven

Since this was recorded over a 10 year period and in different venues, the sounds varies, but it's always at least good, and often excellent. His playing is consistently superb.

Why, sure --- he wouldn't have dared to state that every time he performed DKDF with his wife it was all the same bore all over again, would he?  ;D

Seriously now, okay, yes, Bach is great, even the greatest for some people and I'm fine with that --- but hyperbole like the above is just, how to put it mildly? --- a little bit over the top?

If this is true, then a re-recording of the AoF would be nice.
