That work is just haunting, even though it is "unfinished," it does not feel unfinished in the least, similar to the composer's opera Moses und Aron.

The musico-spiritual struggle in the last section is enormous, and then we hear the sopranos leaping to high C, and being pulled back down to Ab and B below Middle C, from which note a single soprano leaps back to the high C, as if not to be denied her vision...and then her voice fades away into extinction!

I think Schoenberg's unconscious was correct in ending the musical ideas there, again similar to Moses pounding the ground in massive frustration at the end of his opera, "O Wort, Du Wort, Das mir fehlt!" accompanied by a single note swelling and fading away.

Too easy.  DSCH in USA.

How does this compare with e.g. Eugen Jochum, von Karajan, Haitink, and other classic recordings from the past?

Today has been frustratingly almost music free, which doesn't always do me much good, so I'm glad to have some nighttime listening.

Brun: Symphony No. 8 in A major

I must admit I did like this work despite being his second longest symphony. The third movement Notturno showcases his writing for woodwinds, especially, and it is quite evocative. The bass clarinet had certain prominence.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Finishing up the Liepzig SQ series of Raff's chamber music.

The Revue Musicales are for violin and piano, and were originally not published under Raff's name. A musician named Kuffler had been contracted to arrange music from these two operas of Verdi, but died. Raff thereupon did the arrangements, and Kuffler's name appeared on the title page.

No. He's the son of the composer Vladimir Vasilievich Bunin.

No relation with the pianist Stanislav Bunin either.

I've nearly finished this particular pattern of Dvorak listening (which people might or might not have worked out). His music is just so readily digestible. I should be heading for bed, but I can stay awake for this.

Listening again... I don't think I fell asleep during, but soon after.

The 2nd movement Lento must surely rank as amongst Dvorak's greatest moments. I mean, the whole thing is excellent, but this movement in G flat major is extraordinarily expressive.

I'm not sure what I make of the plastic sleeves that the discs come in, but otherwise this box is off to an enjoyable start, and I'm certainly looking forward to hearing the rest. The nearest point of reference I have is Scarlatti rather than Mozart.
