I spent a fair bit of time last year or earlier this year (it is all starting  to blend into one!) exploring Taneyev and very much enjoyed my listening. Your helpful post is a good reminder to go back and revisit :)

Schnittke is, indeed, very much in my ballpark. I confess that I don't know him as well as I ought, however  :o

Again, your post is a good catalyst to picking him up again. His Cello Concertos and symphonies have been my main points of contact so far...
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

The cover art matches the music's moods pretty well.

Gottschalk, Louis Moreau (1829-1869) - Piano Music w/ Philip Martin on 8 Hyperion CDs (obtained all from BRO at half price years ago) - Hyperion has boxed up the set and is offering now as a download HERE - there is also a PDF booklet that I was able to browse, if interested.  Reviews attached.  Dave :)

P.S. more on Gottschalk HERE - he died at 40 years in Rio de Janeiro; there are several versions as to the cause of death?

Traverso

Giovanni Picchi

It says volume 1 on the cover,(1976) there was never a second volume. If there is  one recording where the flamboyant style of Koopman's music making comes into its own, it is on this LP.
As far as I know, there is no CD release, which is a great pity.

Found (and obviously bought) this box set second hand but in mint condition for £10 a few months ago. It's a beautiful thing.

Spotted Horses

Mozart, Symphony No 35, Fricsay

Wonderfully intense performance, with ferocious string playing in the rapid string figuration in the finale and elsewhere, and some beautiful sonorities in the slow movement. Honest mono sound that is satisfying, despite technical limitations.

Makes me wonder if I need to own this set, rather than rely on streaming.

Interesting statement on the cover underneath the orchestra's name:  "Interpreters of Baroque Suggestion".

How did you like the recording David?

It sounds different and improvisational. No one should be introduced to the works through this recording, but I still enjoy it.

Took me a minute to figure out where Knapper's name was on the cover!

"Tangent Piano"

Interesting. Does it sound more like a harpsichord? Or like a very plinky piano?
