Thomas Arne.
Eight Overtures.
Recorded in 1973.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Today's Schumann album:

Fairly good, but maybe not as engaging as the Le Sage yesterday. Mind you, I do tend to struggle with Kreisleriana just a bit.

It seems that the Martinu fever is spreading!  :)

And good morning Harry!

And a good Wednesday to you too. :) Martinu's music is certainly in vogue at the moment.

Poulenc: Concerto for 2 pianos

Possibly a first listen to the work. Dynamic, colourful, very characteristic of the composer.

If I'm recalling correctly, I first fell in love with Dvorak's music, then Janacek, and then Martinu (as my whims and musical journey led me to an exploration of Czech music--which I'm still having fun exploring).

And you?

Martinu came very late in my musical journey. I like his sometimes wild orchestrations and as a opposite complete harmony.

Schütz

Schütz is a composer I discovered early in my life through his Musikalische Exequien with the Dresdner Kreuz Chor and Mauersberger, a recording I still find appealing.
This set was an excellent choice, it breathes a lightness that is not easily associated with Schütz.

To the extent that I struggle with Goyescas, I wondered if it was the recording. So I'm trying Alicia de Larrocha's Decca recording, just the first piece...

Oh goodness. There's no comparison. I need de Larrocha, it'll make a nice pair with her recording of Iberia. It's not only the playing and her fantastic ability to manage all the different voices, the recording quality from 1977 is far better than del Pueyo from about 1956, which makes it possible to hear what she's doing.

A great recording that is fortunately recorded beautifully. The art of the Fugue is a great experience to listen to. You enter a world without worries, without limitations other than your own imagination. Majestic from beginning to end.
