Lieder and solo piano works by Schubert, Schumann, Liszt. The main entry in this fascinating program is Schubert's super-virtuoso Wanderer-Fantasie. Youn is absolutely splendid in this, conjuring up both the dreamy, lyrical with the demonic and manic in a seamless whole. What's more, he never cheapens the work or seem to apologize for its almost garish virtuoso flights.

So far, so good. The disc also contains vocal items. Soprano Isabelle Catherine Vilmar sometimes fights with her voice to maintain the proper pitch. The effort at controlling the vibrato is laudable although not always successful, but in the end her intonation problems make this recital a sort of Jekyll and Hyde affair. Youn plays the other solo pieces with flair and technical mastery.

EDIT: I browsed Spotify for another recording of BWV 194, and picked Rademann (which I did know of). I actually (I'm picky...) quite liked it! :)

Extremely broad range of music. From classical forms (and sound), to electric and strongly rock-tinged.
It's all good...

Granados: Spanish Dances

I hadn't known until this week that the 12 dances were originally published in sets of 3, so I'm trying listening to them that way.

I haven't listened to the recording in quite a while. Though from time to time I'll listen to the fabulous Tori Amos song based on dance number 2...

EDIT: "Quite a while" is apparently 15 years??? Ouch.

As it turns out, I decided to listen to the Granados Spanish Dances the other day, but the piano version. Very enjoyable. Turns out Spain is a real hotbed of piano music.

As far as I know there is only a piano version. The orchestra on that album is only for the Falla.
