Quote from: AnotherSpin on December 01, 2024, 10:53:38 PMThank you for the recommendation. Most likely, I had never listened to works by Henri Marteau before. I started with his Violin Concerto. The music is pleasant, but I can't shake the feeling that I've heard it all before. It seems like some kind of potpourri, pieced together from bits of music by other composers — Tchaikovsky, etc.

Added: I'm continuing to listen HM, now to String Quartet No. 3, Op. 17, and I'm much more impressed!

Interesting, I selected it for listening. Marteau was always a composer I liked in general, so time to explore.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Mediocre at best, sound and performance.

Ernest Ansermet conducts the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in works by Frank Martin: the Violin Concerto (with Wolfgang Schneiderhan as soloist) and In terra pax (with chorus ans vocal soloists, including tenor Ernst Haefliger and alto Marga Höffgen).

CD 32 of this set:

EDIT: TBH, I found the Violin Concerto OK, but In terra pax seemed utterly uninspired and boring to me...

Spotted Horses

Bacewicz, Piano Trio No 2, Kocuiban, Messages Quartet (DUX) A late work, with an avant garde feel, wonderful.

Another performance of Bacewicz Divertimento for Strings, Blaszczyk, DUX. More deliberate than Duxzmal (also DUX). Interesting to hear a different approach to the music.

Hindemith, Sonata for unaccompanied cello, Op 25 No 3, Ermert. An expressionist work, not much Neo-baroque influence.

Also listened to the Wispelwey recording on Channel Classics. A bit more indulgent than Ermert, also enjoyed.

This release has some interesting "fillers" by other composers.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

A nice compilation of music from Powell and Pressburger films.

Is that based on the Hans C.A. story?

Yes and no.  The film-story is about a composer and a ballerina - he writes the music for a ballet which is based on the HCA story and her dancing of this "new work" is a major part of the film and ultimately she dies in a way that mirrors the fate of the fairytale heroine.  But most of the film is about the relationship between the two main protagonists and having to choose career or love - the wiki article is quite detailed - certainly worth a watch
