What is a mock rehearsal? How does that work?

Mock, because it's not actually for a performance. They get sn idea how I, erm, conduct the rehearsal, and how we all get on. They've sent me two pieces to work with them.

So, you work on pieces with the musicians/singers, but it's never performed?  To me, it sounds like a rather (pardon) fake atmosphere and maybe not good/realistic for anyone involved?  Just my initial thoughts.   :(  I'd like to hear your further thoughts though...truly.

It's fairly common practice for us non-stellar conductors, actually. Any consideration of "we're not really performing this, so we can coast" is offset by the aspect that the chorus is also in a sense auditioning for the conductor. He's a new quantity to them, so they are apt to be on the alert. I led just such a mock-rehearsal at the church in Danvers when I applied for the job.

They're singing a Holiday concert this weekend, so both of the pieces I'll work with them on Monday are seasonal. It kind of makes an audition feel like a party. It's all good.

Off to pick up a head of cabbage. Mamochka has offered to make cabbage pies. Which makes cabbie today's highest priority.

Quote from: Karl Henning on December 03, 2024, 02:51:20 PMI still haven't yet found my way with this. It will wait. I've made a start on a new Henning Ensemble piece which I've tentatively dubbed Dark Side of the Sun. I feel I cannot be the first to come up with that, and I guess I'm hoping not to discover any turf conflict.
I've decided that I don't care that others came up with that title first. I'm using it, just the same.

Quote from: Karl Henning on December 03, 2024, 04:54:25 PMAlso, under Not quite sure why I still bother, I've found two calls to which I'll send scores already in the portfolio.
One of the calls is looking for both orchestral and chamber scores (chamber works for 7-12 players ... most of my present catalogue is for fewer, or more. I need to mull). For orchestra, I'll anonymize a number from White Nights. The most work needed now is to prep parts. There is time.

What are cabbage pies like?  Or, at least hers?

Very doubtful I have any work to suit the chamber call. Could I pare Ear Buds down to 12 players? Dunno.

Believe it or not, the little actual work (adding cues to the flute part of the Intermezzo) and the thought laid into the chamber call, has been very tiring. That's life since my stroke. At some point I will slouch from Why should I even bother? to I ain't gonna bother.

So, "hand pies" (called various things around the world).   :)  I just found a recipe that I'm tempted to try for a cabbage and mushroom pie.  Looking forward to your pic(s) when you have a chance and finding out what she puts in her recipe.
