The National Symphony Orchestra (My local orchestra) has released its own set of recordings (Like many orchestras).

I purchased its CD on the music of George Walker

I am listening to this on the Apple Music Stream. There is some interesting music on this CD. I personally did not care for the Songs of Separation but I did enjoy the other works.

Britten: String Quartet No. 2 (Heath Quartet, recorded live in 2021 at the Presteigne Festival)

Outstanding, with great mood contrasts. On a related note, so many great quartets these days (i.e., ensembles) it's hard to keep track of them all.

"I set down a beautiful chord on paper—and suddenly it rusts."
—Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998)

Now, this is the Dvorak I was expecting: nationalistic, lyrical, poetic - not locked into "form," allowing his storytelling abilities to take centerstage. Perhaps, I am misreading him, but his "formal" works, while delightful, all seem to be lacking, as it seemed like he was trying to achieve some level of perfection, which is an impossible standard, so he always seemed to be holding back. Perhaps, it was the shadow of Beethoven, but I don't think that explanation works for Dvorak as he produced just as much in the major orchestral and chamber forms as Beethoven.

Debussy - Disc 25 Choral Works, from the big box set. Enjoyed, overall. Especially both versions of La Damoiselle élue,

Replaying this again today. Giuliani, performed by Raffaele Carpino, on the TACTUS label. Such a wonderful recording and terrific sound.

My 2023 purchase of the year (by far!). I keep bringing out this box set and playing a couple of discs. Was terrific for me as a "newbie" into exploring a fairly broad spectrum of the classical guitar repertoire. Here, I am playing disc 7 and disc 19, which are Etudes for the guitar from a wide variety of composers and genres. Performed marvelously by Óscar Cáceres.

Today's listening: Part 3 of 3:

Roussel - My first listen to all these compositions! A more favourable "first impression" in comparison to D'Indy. The incidental music to Le marchard de sable qui passe was beautiful! And Symphony No. 1, what a great, impressive debut symphonic effort! Very colourful work.

Þorvaldsdóttir - In the Light of Air was mesmerizing, yet intense at the same time. Keeps you on the edge of your seat! My favourite movement was the IV. Remembrance. As for Transitions, that composition made less of an impression on first listen.

I have, but I will be giving them a relisten in the near future.

I still have his string quartets to get through that will be done at a later time as well, maybe.
