I find it helpful that Spotted Horses, for example, puts all (or most of) his previous aliases at the end of his postings here.

No that was specific to PD/K at the time. But that does not even address the fact that you can change your handle to be different from your username. I created this new account to leave being a moderator back when the forum was still bugged. I made this account DavidW2, and then immediately changed the handle to DavidW (which is what you see).

But now, just like for most of the history, I believe you can use the same username again. That was a temporary bug.

There is nothing stopping John from changing his handle that we see to "Mirror Image." And I think everyone would appreciate that.

I have this stupid impulse to make a very silly re-entanglement of letters, believing from old experience that you'll be sympathetic, Karl. So I'm going to do it.

This.

I briefly changed my handle to Il conte Rodolfo (taking a cue from Baron Scarpia at the time, Spotted Horses today) when we were actually urged to do that in order to avoid a bug in the old forum.

I changed mine for the same reason to "aulos" but only for a few months. My impression was that this was very confusing for the other members.

There are forums where ones username and/or handle can't be changed.

My handle will remain the same regardless of what others say.

Until next week, that is. ;D

I don't think it was a bug. I think it was a case where changing handles would prevent a spam attack from trying make use of our public usernames. That's when I went from Baron Scarpia to Ghost of Baron Scarpia (if I recall right).
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Thanks for clarifying the issue.

You can change how your name appears on your posts, regardless of what your login name is. I figured that out after I re-enrolled. I had to pick a different sign in name, but don't have to display that name if I don't want to.  8)

Anyone changing usernames could simply put on their profiles an explanatory "formerly so and so", thereby removing the identity mystery.

Thank you!
I might be dull or just not paying attention but I usually only get the vague notion that a person is an old acquaintance with a new name but I don't realize WHO it is.
For a similar reason I dislike frequently changing avatars (and often don't use a picture at all myself as I do here). But stable username and changing avatars is far preferable to changed usernames.
Tout le malheur des hommes vient d'une seule chose, qui est de ne savoir pas demeurer en repos, dans une chambre.

I've used a few usernames over the last decade, but I've kept the same avatar picture.
