All great Dave! My favorite is Talich, and I would also add Griller/Primrose and Whistler/Salomon.

Hélène Grimaud plays J.S. Bach...

Preludies and fugues from the WTC, Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D major (the pianist leaves the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen), the Bach-Busoni Chaconne, Bach-Liszt Prelude in A minor, and Bach-Rachmaninov Prelude in E major.

When I first got this CD many years ago, I was struck by how "muscular" Mme. Grimaud's playing was. I have the same impression now. But... I like it!  :)

Vol 3 of the CPO Goetz set of orchestral works. I found Goetz' take on Schiller's poem (Nenie/Nänie) more interesting than Brahms'.

EDIT: I should have mentioned that the soprano solo in Psalm 137 sings like an angel. It definitely adds to the success of the performance.

It's a bit like Otello singing Schubert! I keep expecting to hear "a terra, e piangi."

Quote from: SonicMan46 on February 03, 2025, 09:32:58 AMMozart, WA - String Quintets - yesterday listened to the two sets of these works in my collection (Nash Ensemble & Talich Quartet) - reviews attached (Klenke Quartet included; Talich seems to get the honors). Today, listening to the two recordings at the bottom, Alexander Quartet & the older Grumiaux Trio+, both in a Spotify playlist playing over my den speakers.

Any favorites in these groups and others that I can sample on Spotify?  Dave :)

Ethel Smyth
Serenade in D Major
Double Concerto for Violin & Horn

Sophie Langdon, violin
Richard Watkins, horn
BBC PO - Odaline de la Martinez

I haven't really taken to Smyth's chamber music, so I was glad to make the acquaintance of this recording. The serenade seems to follow a Brahms footprint, whereas I am reminded of Carl Nielsen in the concerto. The latter is a gas!

Have been in the chorus for a performance of the Brahms back in college, I have to say that's not a difficult thing to do.

Barbirolli/Philharmonia in the symphony, Sargent/LSO in the other works, which are actually in reverse order from what's on the CD cover and include Fantasia on Greensleeves.

Hey Mandryka - well, never heard of the group, sorry -  :'(  On Spotify, only 2 of the works are offered (K.406 & K.593) - on Presto, same as a DL?  Dave :)

Very engaging piece. I am finding Aho to be really enjoyable.
