Paul Constaninescu's Byzantine Sonata for Solo Cello: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGqCYG3FzR8

I think the cello is easily the instrument I enjoying hearing the most solo. It creates a tremendously rich soundscape, and the deep, full bass is something that I fall in love with each time that I hear it. Dynamically and rhythmically the piece is interesting as I believe it is using modes (or at least it is using a system that sounds closer to traditional Romanian music than "classical"). High recommendation - this is one I'd purchase if I can find it. :)

The new erato

Now at disc 14 of this 21 CD set and amazed at the consistent quality both of works and performances.

Been on a Romanian kick lately: Currently, Ulpiu Vlad's (2024) Lumina cerului nocturn II for Clarinet Quartet (premiered on his 80th birthday:

As you might already know, I love "queer" relationships, and jettisoning a violin is a move I can get behind any day of the week. ;D

I mean this is a composer at their height, so it is a flawless work truly demonstrating mastery of the craft. It is definitely a technical, and I can imagine a taxing piece, but, I feel, the results are worth it, and I love that all of the Romanian music I've heard thus far never strays too far from the folk/traditional music, which means that sounds is always a bit crooked, a bit slanted, as they aren't using normal "keys," as it were.

High recommend. :)

CD 10
It shouldn't surprise me, as such excellent musicians in a largely self-governing ensemble elected to create the album: Franz Krommer's music is a good deal better than I gave him credit for.

Disc one. The symphony and the concerto.

The symphony bustles with ideas and kept me engaged throughout. The thematic material is good although not memorable, but Mayer makes it work very well. The concerto otoh is a more settled, amiable affair. Nice sounding but not very deep. Both works date from the 1850s. Ries, Hummel and Field come to mind.

Mapman

Brahms: Double Concerto, St. Anthony Variations, Tragic Overture
Rose, Stern; Walter: New York

These are excellent performances of the Double Concerto and Tragic Overture. It's interesting that this recording was made closer to the date of composition of the Concerto than to today!

Why does the cover art remind me of Pink Floyd?!  😄

Interesting. How are you finding works/recording? A favoured seller has LP for sale and I'm tempted.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.
