Mozart String Quartet KV458, Quatuor Mosaïques

What a delight it is to return to a work like this, that I used to listen to obsessively and knew bar by bar back in the day. After a break it seems new, yet familiar. This quartet is brilliant from start to finish but the Adagio, which comes third, is particularly miraculous. The performance is satisfying.

The seating plan seems to be first left, viola right, second violin and cello in the back row.

I reported that the Mosaiques recording of KV465 was strange, with first violin right, second violin left. I found that the uncharacteristic arrangement was present in the reissue shown below:

The original issue a normal soundstage with first violin in the left second violin on the right.

This applies to the version on Apple Music streaming. I don't know if the channel switch is also present on the physical media.

I've found a blindingly intense version of Shostakovich's 4th!!

and another fine recording....

Spotted Horses

Bach, Cantata BWV3, Harnoncourt, Concentus Musicus Wien

A very fine Cantata which doesn't seem to get much attention, it mostly appears in the complete cycles. I enjoyed the aria for Bass and continuo (with a wonderful Bachian bass line) and especially the haunting duet for alto and soprano with Oboe d'Amore I and II obligato.

The picture is the complete Cantata edition, but I actually have it in the Teldec complete Bach Edition, but in the end I streamed it. Modern life.

It's vivid stereo.  The big (BIG!) moments come through well.

Maybe Schubert was responding to Goethe.

Quote from: André on February 13, 2025, 05:36:21 AMWow ! 😳 Anyone ever said some Mozart or Schubert works were too feminine ?
Go Ethel Smyth, go !

Indeed! What kind of meaningless cr*p is that? Too masculine for what? Perhaps the reviewer was a regular at Mr. Cholmondley-Warner dinner parties.  ::)
